basic office costs $100 this gives me a good reason not to buy it.
Very nice, though I just got the full, unlimited version of Microsoft Office 2016 Professional through my work for £9.95. (It's a fully legal service provided by Microsoft through workplaces called HUP - Home Use Program.)
Anselhelm - only for as long as you continue to work for that company - if you continue to use it after leaving then you'll be breaching the terms and condition.
That said, it's a darn good offer that I have also taken advantage of in the past.
And of course, if all you need is Word, Excel and Powerpoint but you must have MS document compatibility, there's the free version of Office Online. It's lacking a few features, but for most home users it's everything they need.
EDIT:
Amusingly it would appear the MS have actually released all of the free office online components to the Chrome webstore, so you can add them to your Chrome browser! Gonna be trying that when I get home...

No version of MS office has ever had "MS document compatibility" with different versions. Mostly yes, complete no.
Not unusual - I'm going take a punt on you working in a fairly large organisation of some kind. Industry inertia is one of the reasons for lengthy extended support on many versions of Windows, Win 7 is a good OS, and AFAIK there've been no real advances in Office since 2k10 (I use 2k13 at work and 2k10 at home and couldn't tell you the difference, tbh!), so there's no harm being on 2k10/Win 7...
