If they had user replaceable batteries they could have just sent out new batteries, guess they might be changing the dimensions of the new cells/handsets to stop the old ones being used.

Good. It's about time that this happens. The Samsung 7 Slate owners got NOTHING as the screen pushed itself away from the unit.

    I was thinking that too.

Harder to make phone waterproof then though. Also it is true that the outer casing of a removeable battery probably makes this less likely. All in all I'm satisfied Samsung have made the best of a bad situation with a quick recall

Replaceable batteries potentially extends the phones life too, which phone manufacturers are against for pretty obviously reasons.

    Just in:

SAMSUNG INITIATES UK & IRELAND PRODUCT EXCHANGE PROGRAMME FOR GALAXY NOTE7 DEVICES

LONDON, UK β€” September 6, 2016 β€” Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. has announced details of the UK and Ireland Product Exchange Programme for Galaxy Note7 owners. This programme has been launched following the announcement made on 2 September 2016, regarding isolated battery cell issues with the Galaxy Note7 device.

While there have been only a small number of reported incidents globally, Samsung is committed to prioritising the safety of customers. Samsung has identified the affected inventory and stopped sales and shipments of those devices.

For UK customers who have Galaxy Note7 devices, Samsung in collaboration with its partners and operators, will voluntarily replace their current device with a new one.

UK customers who have Galaxy Note7 devices will be contacted by the provider or operator from which they purchased the product in order to arrange their device exchange. The exchange of units will begin from 19 September 2016.

Conor Pierce, Vice President of IT & Mobile of Samsung Electronics UK & Ireland, said: β€œThe safety and satisfaction of customers is our top priority and by working closely with our partners and operators, we are taking a proactive approach to address the needs of Galaxy Note7 customers in the UK. We are encouraging customers to exchange their Galaxy Note7 by taking advantage of the Product Exchange Programme.”

Customers with Galaxy Note7 service related questions can also contact the Samsung customer service team on 0330 7261000.

If they simply applied sufficient quality control standards in the production process, which you would expect to be the minimum for an electronic device that could explode! Especially considering most people carry the phone near their 'tenders!'

Whether the problem could have been resolved by using replaceable batteries remains to be seen. Anyway replaceable batteries are so old hat, battery extenders, or external battery power packs are far better alternatives imo.
