At that price they'll sell less than the Google Pixel.. .... Especially if it comes complete with Huawei EMUI and lack of software support..

Whilst I understand for the majority of people now, their phone is their most used piece of tech they own, and thus its probably possible to justify getting people to make it one of the more *valuable* pieces of tech they own....

We are still at a point where you replace your phone after 2 years. I dont think anyone wants to start paying that much for something that has such a short lifespan. Thats the part that will need to change first before you get everyone shelling out thousands for a handset.

Really? I expect to keep a phone at least 5 or 6 years.

    ... I am surprised, I wasn't expecting a non-apple phone to breach that 1k mark first! Incredible.

2 years is usually dictated by the rip off contract from your provider, if your still muggins enough to pay £30+ per month for the slightest of upgrades, every 2 years.

I've been on sim only, and buying second hand phones for a while now, cannot justify a full contract phone. 5/6 is OTT for me though, that's Galaxy S3/iPhone 4S territory

Re: Top spec Huawei Mate 9 Pro smartphone to cost $1300

An iPhone 7 with 256GB costs $849 with no phone carrier subsidy.

$1300 isn't that big of a stretch for a tricked out phone with 6GB RAM, 256GB flash and whatever other bells and whistles attached. It has Google VR as well so it probably has a top of the line curved display.

There is also the China factor, Huawei wants to displace Apple so is going very high end product wise to try and differentiate itself from other race to the bottom Chinese manufacturers. iPhone's have huge social status associated with them in Chinese society basically your rich and successful if you have one and if you don't your a dirty poor is basically the gist of it.

There's a similar thing in this country. If you have one you're a trendy something with more money than sense, (or a stealing hoodie mugger), and if you don't then you're not gullible/insecure enough to get sucked-in by the hype.

Depends on what you're after... you can resell your old phone on and make some money back or whatever. If you don't have the cash around to make an expensive purchase you can spread the cost. Each to their own. I always weigh up the contract V sim only deals and can usually (just) get a better contract price due to my high data useage currently at approx 15 gig a month each and every month with a new or newish phone. I do have to shop around though...
Old puter - still good enuff till I save some pennies!

Coor, 15GB per month, that must be a monster monthly bill. Im on a 20GB EE sim only for £16, rolling. Bought an older phone, which made it considerably more cost effective that any offer out there.

I would disagree with that, every man and his dog etc own iPhone's in this country. Symbol of wealth it definitely is not. Although the ability to aggravate Android owners who see the device as frivolous for gullible/insecure sheeple and only successful due to the hype and marketing, is just an added bonus.
