Barclays rolls out contactless cash machines

You can withdraw up to £100 with just a tap of your debit card or NFC smartphone.

Yeah, bypassing the slow card insert/read/eject mechanism will be handy. Also not losing your card in a dodgy machine. I bet 95%+ of withdrawals are under £100 too.

The TL;DR is that contactless is very secure. No two contactless transactions are ever the same, it's incredibly fast but it uses fancy algorithms to ensure each transaction is unique, which means nobody can "skim" your card and go on a shopping spree.

Neither of which are unique to contactless. So kind of a moot point surely? I mean, you still need the PIN. The only thing this helps with, is the speed of the transaction, as you dont have to wait for the insert/remove of the card.

My Santander branch has had these for a while (at least since early this year), but I've always inserted my card and am half way through putting in my PIN before I realise/remember.

    Sure thing...

OK, if someone (somehow*) manages to pickpocket my wallet and make off with my card, it could be a few days before I next even go to use the card. Meanwhile, they're off Contactlessing my rather limited funds away. While I understand they'll not be able to use anything PIN-related, they can still shop at all the Contactless outlets... at least until my money runs out.

    How is that secure?

*They'd need to access a zipped-up inner bike jacket pocket, take out the wallet which is chained to the pocket, unzip it and remove the card, before replacing the wallet, all without me noticing...

Re: Barclays rolls out contactless cash machines

I don't like contactless either (won't even use it) so I was like seriously.... and the only way Barclays will give me a card without contactless feature is by having a credit card (really it should be the other way round due to cc protection etc)... which I don't want.

Why don't I like contactless cards... out of curiosity I wanted to see if it could be easily read and you know what I could read stuff using a nexus 7 and an off the shelf nfc reader app so in theory all it takes is someone with a little knowledge on coding etc to get a working 'take payment app' that can skim stuff as you're walking round.

.... or just clone it contactlessly - no phyiscal thievery required.
    NFC disabled on my phone.
NFC never will be an option on a bank/credit card for me.

You can only use the card contactless-ly for a limited number of transactions before you get prompted for the PIN (in my experience).

It is a cash replacement technology, and no less safe than losing cash in your wallet to the pickpocket.

Someone's already mentioned this, but there's a limit to how many times a card can be used / spent on the card before it prompts for a PIN / Contact transaction.

Except it doesn't work like this at all. There's some confusion around this because the first "contactless" cards in the USA were just RFID tags embedded into a dumb plastic card (and yeah, those can be cloned very trivially). We use chip (US is currently migrating to chip) and have done for years, so our contactless is much more advanced. There's a special kind of handshake and cryptographic checks that are unique to every transaction, so you can't "clone" a card at all. The worst you can do is steal a single transaction, but there's a problem with that....which I'll lead onto here....

You cannot "clone" a card. You cannot clone it without doing really crazy stuff like decapping the chip on the card itself, using some kind of electron microscope and pulling the private keys. Thousands of £££ worth of equipment and effort.

Okay, so there's a problem with this. Say you're a theif and you've got a reader you've taken on the bus to just go around going "boop, boop boop" to anyone passing by, stealing £20 here, £30 there. Where does that money actually go?

    To your bank.

Now imagine that those people suddenly all start complaining to their banks about fraud on their card. What's going to happen? It's all going to get traced back to the same terminal - yours. Which is linked to your bank account.

You cannot just buy a terminal and go shopping, you have to get an agreement with a payment processor (i.e. a bank) and they will want proof of who you are. So yeah, you could steal some money but it'll get traced straight back to you.

Oh, great... so now everyone HAS to have RFID blocking crap in their wallets, manufacturers get to charge a premium for what we're forced to have, because banks won't issue non-contactless cards any more?
    Wooo, colour me happy......

    Great. Wonderful.
So they can empty my meagre account in one transaction, incur me overdraft charges and potentially leave me stranded 520 miles from home.... but they can only do it a few times before having to try and guess my PIN?
    Great.....

You're not selling me on this so far!!
