Cool stuff and really the path MS should have taken years ago, still better late then never.
The gaming aspects of this could be very interesting though really I think someone would have to cook up an Arm CPU paired with low end AMD/Nvidia GPU for a reasonable handheld capable of running Steam, Origin, Xbox Anywhere games. This is basically what the Nintendo Switch is.

They kinda did with Windows RT on ARM / surface RT, but didn't open up the desktop part to 3rd party applications
(and that didn't have an x86 emulation layer) - was later jailbroken to run .net apps
and others just a compile away from working:

This is building up on that - I assume win32 calls go native ARM (like wine) with the rest emulated.

WOT blitz isn't very impressive, it's the mobile port of WOT so already runs fine on android devices
Re: Windows 10 Enterprise demoed running on Snapdragon 820 chip
Emm,so that is X86 Windows on a ARM chip - is this some sort of X86 emulation??

Yes.

I would hope it is dynamic translation/recompilation, like DEC was doing on the Alpha some twenty years ago.
But this is Microsoft, so unless they could buy in the technology it is probably some basic slow emulation ;)
Seriously, I hope this is a decent usable technology, though probably not as much as Nvidia who were banned by Intel from doing this and now they don't have to. The Tegra chips should make for some really nice laptops, they are kind of wasted in a Chromebook.
Note though that the DEC Alpha could run x86 code in emulation/translation faster than any native x86 silicon available at the time, but it didn't help sell chips.
Needs to be expanded to AMD64 though to make it properly usable.

Maybe read the article?
Re: Windows 10 Enterprise demoed running on Snapdragon 820 chip
I want Windows 10 on my Lumia 950XL and I want it now!
When I left the apple eco-system a couple of years ago I swore I wouldn't return and started enjoying Windows phones until I finally got pee'd off when the apps that I needed weren't there. I've recently bought another "i-thing" and put my 950XL in the drawer but this would make me switch back again.

No, it's ARM Windows on ARM, running x86 Windows Apps via emulation.

I am still impressed - this is basically a phone SOC running normal Windows. Some of the Apple cores show what is possible with ARM based chips,so it might push for development of faster ARM chips too.
Re: Windows 10 Enterprise demoed running on Snapdragon 820 chip
It's not a huge leap from what enthusiasts have been doing for a while. In the last couple of years we have seen Windows running on some pretty odd devices!
I wonder if Microsoft were inspired by these hackers/modders?

Raspberry Pi is a set top box SoC running desktop Linux, so ARM has been demonstrably desktop capable for years.
In some ways you have to ask why Microsoft have been lagging behind so badly.
Still, given the way that Windows 10 utterly floors my old E350 dual core AMD64 capable netbook with 6GB of ram and an SSD, I have to wonder just how well this will work long term. Perhaps they haven't bothered with virus scanner for example, though that would run native and not be emulated at least.

Well they are running the Snapdragon 820 which is one of the highest performing ARM cores out there IIRC and the Apple ones are apparently even getting close to Intel IPC levels too(!!).

They are running it on a 820 but if what I've been reading is correct we may have to wait, and possibly be restricted to 835 based devices. :(

Partly the Apple issue width is wide, but Nvidia Tegra chips with standard A series cores are pretty fast so just having a decent memory system seems to make a big difference and I suspect Apple get that right too.
Hmm, this could be further ammo for the "Apple will release an ARM laptop and ditch Intel" rumours :D
