What's the betting it will be locked to UWP games from the Windows store and run via the XBox app.

I hope this is genuine and implemented well. I'm currently running an A10 7870K (which for the cost of the build, I could not be happier with) with an old laptop HDD inside a cardboard box for a case. I sure wouldn't mind a few fps when playing KSP or Stellaris lol.

Whilst I'm inclined to say "probably" (so that the OS can communicate with the UWP and I suppose ditch stuff that can be ditched), non-UWP apps are already supported via the Xbox app complete with their own game hubs such as League of Legends.

Re: Windows 10 'game mode' settings uncovered in insider update

for comedy value we opened up solitaire - yes that crappy piece of MS free junk - on our brand new win10 lappy over the holiday. i) it is a ghastly pile of junk compared even to the XP version, nevermind win7, 2) it tries to connect to internet and MS app store X-box blah blah blah - only way to stop this is using flight mode, and 3) watch your battery get gobbled up either way. If this is triggering a "game mode" for something as basic as solitaire they need to sort it out, as there is no reason why something so basic should nuke 5 hours of battery life in about 1 hour, with the fans maxing out etc etc.

I will quite happily when it doesn't work properly. The old version didn't have the problem, how have they managed to stuff it up so badly? I complain a lot about things that are free. Rain when I want a BBQ, or when I'm half-way to a meeting without a coat (because the weather forecast said I didn't need one), getting a cold, people who post smug self-superior replies on forums just because they can't find it within themselves to be constructive. That kind of thing. This is no different.

Re: Windows 10 'game mode' settings uncovered in insider update

I'd rather they allow us to choose what updates to download instead of doing it the moment your system is connected to the internet. Also, a progress bar for the updates when installing them. The first time I connected my new laptop to the internet, and I was shocked because the net was very slow. I didn't know that updates were being downloaded in the background. The lack of a progress bar when installing updates was another pain.

I wonder if this stops Windows from forcibly shutting down the machine for updates mid-way though a game?

Wonderful, it will be a bit like 1997 again, creating Windows 95 game boot disks to only load game resources - back to the future!

It's not really a huge loss, windows update progress bars/indicators have always been hilariously unreliable. In the 'takes 5 minutes to get from say 0-80%, then 10mins to get to 85%, then seconds for the final 15%' way.

I'll reserve judgement until it is released and I can see how it fares. It could be a benefit to people with middling hardware for gaming, maybe squeeze an extra few fps by prioritizing or suspending other threads.

Seems like an odd comment to make.

    1) Microsoft charge for windows 10
    2) Even if you did get the upgrade for free, you'd expect to have it since it'd been included in many previous versions and for it to work decently. New versions of the software are meant to be a step forward, but for various reasons, some people have preferred to keep with 7/8 even with the free offer which is definitely not what you'd want if you were microsoft.

I look forward to them finding a "stability.dll" in the next release.
