More reasons to postpone buying a new computer.

First we're waiting for SSD prices to come down,
Then waiting on the release of Zen to hopefully reduce the premium on CPUs,
and now memory prices are spiking again,

It's like the tech manufacturers don't want us buying shiny new things!

Meh, i shop with the desire/affordability of my current pocket, versus the real factor which is what enjoyment/fulfilment you are being rewarded with at time, which is compared with what you get out of it at your hour of need. Prices are always going to go up and down who cares.

oh joy.... more increases for no real reason, they've been going up since this time last year, the ram I bought a year ago is now over twice the price I paid for it.

Based on "last 16GB" I'm going to assume you've already got at least 16GB, so I'd say you're probably best off waiting,
I picked up 32GB in 2013 and in 4 years I've probably needed to use over 16GB a half-dozen times at most. (And those few times were due to CAD software being memory hungry)

I tend to spin up an 8 or 16gb ramdrive to use as scratch - works well if you rarely shut down.

Scratch as in scratch disk for Photoshop?

Photoshop is probably where I got the terminology from originally, but you are better just increasing how much RAM that would use so it doesn't need the scratch disk at all.

I just meant use it more generally where you have any disk intensive applications that get bottlenecked by your HD
