In all fairness it's true of the French army in World War 2 so not sure why you are so offended. I'd think every nation out there has a skeleton or two in their cupboards from the past and are all open to some degree of mocking

It's interesting how historical education in most countries talks down the importance of WW1. From the UK or american point of view it looks like a silly spat between cousins that happened to involve several million people dying, whereas for the french it was a fight for national survival. Like how reports of the christmas truce is thought of as a good thing in most countries, while at the time the french were outraged that it would occur - after all, that no-mans-land used to be french villages & towns.

It was the French army in WW2 that made it possible for the Brits to have their 'victory' at Dunkirk. From Wiki: "From 28–31 May 1940, in the Siege of Lille, the remaining 40,000 men of the once-formidable French First Army fought a delaying action against seven German divisions, including three armoured divisions".

But seeing how we're talking about WW1 I'm not sure why you brought WW2 up.

BTW France lost nearly 5% (edit: Wiki says 4.29% to 4.39%) of its population in WW1 (for comparison, USA: 0.13%). Perhaps when the UK & US have had an army devastating their home turf they might have more respect for those that have actually experienced that brutality firsthand.

Indeed, I work with the french frequently, and in the most part they tend to give as good as they get.
