"No compromises between resolution and framerate"

This seems like a strange boast. What do they mean by that? Surely there is always a compromise between resolution and framerate.

    Means probably 2160p @ 60 fps
The more you live, less you die. More you play, more you die. Isn't it great.

Yup, they already stated that Scorpio will play all older games at 4k while maintaining 60FPS.

I can't wait to see how many of them end up being 1890p or some other weirdo resolution rescaled.....

I don't know about meaningless - presumably it means they'll compromise elsewhere - I imagine image quality wiull be the first thing to go

tbh I can see that being the big push - they'll insist that developers offer 1080p60 and 4k60 settings, and the way most will achieve that will be to turn off/down certain IQ enhancements to run at 4k. Assuming the console correctly identifies where it's connected to a 4k TV it could even automatically select the lower IQ settings so the whole process is transparent to the end user...

What struck me as a strange boast was "The most powerful graphics processor ever in a console". Assuming their big news is a next-gen console, it'd be weird if it didn't out-power both their own previous offerings, and the best the competition currently have. After all, the high-end console war is pretty much a game of leap-frog between MS and Sony.

I'm probably about ready for a new console, having skipped the XBox One altogether, but (assuming spec and performance are as implied) whether I buy or not will be determined by my perception of how nosy MS are, and exactly what their T&C's are in relation to privacy. If this is merely another opportunity to snoop, data gather and advertise, then my buying decision will be the same as for the XBO. If this is a platform for that, then regardless of how good a gaming platform it is, it's not for me.

I hope to be pleasantly surprised, but I'm not holding my breath waiting for the leopard to de-spot itself. So my working assumption is .... no thanks.

I'd be astonished if this isn't their PS4 Pro equivalent, the Xbox One upgrade codename "Scorpio". Which, similarly, will be a better spec SoC which can run existing games at a better framerate/resolution than the existing console.

Re: "Brace for big news" at E3, teases Microsoft Xbox

I think the best thing they could do is drop the Xbox One brand name still derisively nicknamed Xbone across the net, however I have a strong feeling they are going to stick with calling it Xbox One Elite or Ultra.

Call it Xbox 520 then brand the old Xbox One's as "520 edition" via firmware update so there no one left behind and Xbone buried in the ground.

Xbox One is still a bad name for a box and Microsoft's one branding company wide never really took off apart from OneDrive, that and the console market is highly conservative, it likes things being properly numbered.
