1% at most. Actually in the GTX1080 test the x8 PCIe 3.0 config was a bit quicker.
Admittedly, this is single GPU but it seems that tech sites have gotten tired of these tests since they don't really show anything so couldn't find anything within the last year which tested a dual GPU setup.

Thanks for digging it up, ya there's no real difference, the cards aren't pushing enough data to saturate the link. I'm no high score warrior myself, but I can't imagine even the most fervent of em to care about it.

I mean, if I had 10 grand that I wouldn't miss, I'd probably build a redonk system, but going for 16x/16x..I just can't imagine it ever being a thing. When 8K becomes a thing maybe, but that's a decade away, at least.

Re: Asus details quartet of AMD AM4 Ryzen motherboards

I thought it was slightly more of a potential issue for AMD cards in multi GPU setup because they no longer use any Crossfire Bridge Interconnects between the cards to pass information so all of the communication between the cards has to go over the PCIe bus as well as the usual GPU traffic.

Crossfire and SLI are on their way out and are dead-end technologies. Not many are worried about them any more.

Probably not though. Gigabyte says on their X370: "Support for ECC Un-buffered DIMM 1Rx8/2Rx8 memory modules (operate in non-ECC mode)"

The fact that Gigabyte don't support ECC mode doesn't mean that Ryzen doesn't. In fact, the fact that they mention ECC memory at all is an indication that Ryzen does support ECC.

ASUS have a history of support ECC in desktop AMD platforms; most other manufacturers don't. So I wouldn't be at all surprised is ASUS do support and Gigabyte don't - that would be entirely in keeping with their previous positions.

Scan currently have the Asus ROG Crosshair VI Hero and 1700X listed as a bundle for £619.93 - although this doesn't include RAM or CPU cooler.

As soon as bundles appear with RAM and a cooler included, I'll be on it like a car bonnet!

This would be ideal for a ZFS server box I'm looking to setup. I'd assume a 1700X would be fine to go with this yeah?

In a few days you could have an R5 for a lot less money, do you really need all those cores?

I was under the impression that only the R7 line + X370 supports ECC? You're right though, I have no need for all those cores. This won't happen straight away, so I'll definitely wait to see how the R5 line stacks up.

Any ideas on whether all R5s or just the unlocked R5-X's will support ECC, or is ECC support down to the mobo chipset (X370 in this case)?

    So far I've planned for:

ECC support seems to be mostly about whether the mobo maker enables it. And no, X370 is not required as B350 can support it too, but it seems occasionally, BIOS updates can break things:
    https://forums.anandtech.com/threads...#post-38832905
Bought Asrock AB350 Pro4 with Crucial CT2K4G4WFS8266 2x4GB 2666 MHZ ECC. Under linux kernel 4.10 worked out of the box (BIOS 1.30) with ECC as reported by kernel module "EDAC amd64: DRAM ECC enabled". However upgrading to BIOS 2.20 broke this, reporting something like "ECC disabled in BIOS". I was not able to get it working with the 2.20 BIOS, so now I am running on previous stable version which is 1.40. BTW both versions got ECC related settings like scrubbing, but a recognizable ECC Enable/Disable option seems lacking.
As for R5 (or even R3), I don't think AMD are going to be disabling anything for now. Maybe once they start recovering a lot of marketshare but for now they are avoiding most market segmentation a la Intel.

As for R5 (or even R3), I don't think AMD are going to be disabling anything for now. Maybe once they start recovering a lot of marketshare but for now they are avoiding most market segmentation a la Intel.
I tend to try and go for the best mobo chipset if possible, to try and do a bit of future-proofing, as I tend to cannibalise and re-purpose systems later on. Thanks for the info!
