Multithreaded performance is there but sadly gaming and single core performance is lacking. Overclocking is mediocre at best. We can see now why we could buy one on pre-order but they still had a NDA on reviews. Hopefully these problems with SMT can be fixed by the time the rest of the cpu's are launched otherwise it's back to hoping for more when the next generation is launched.

ST performance seems between Haswell to BW-E levels in non-gaming scenarios, but its a combination of performance regressions with SMT and motherboard issues hampering it in games.

In regards to gaming ASUS in particular, and MSI to some extent. It explains why reviewers such as Joker, Crit, UFDiciple, and TechDeals had far better gaming performance.

Golem.de in Germany had this to say in regards to their MSI motherboard.

    https://translate.google.co.uk/trans...ml&prev=search

The MSI board was delivered with BIOS version 113, until last Friday a new one appeared.

Version 117, which is still up-to-date, improved speed and stability. If we were still able to count on sporadic Bluescreens with the older UEFI, the board is currently stable. Much more important, however, is the drastically higher performance in games and the real pack with 7-Zip. The release notes include, among other things, a fixed problem with the memory act and its timing as well as the voltage.

Compared to the original bios, the new UEFI increases the image rate in our game course between plus 4 and plus 26 percent, on the average even plus 17 percent!

Re: QOTW: Has AMD Ryzen lived up to your expectations?

I'm a little underwhelmed. It has impacted the market but only a small segment and possibly only short term, I am under no illusions the real competitors to these parts aren't even Broadwell-E, they are going to be the Skylake and Kaby Lake X parts due in the summer. What's more I remain unconvinced over IPC/single threaded performance that will impact the mainstream parts like the 4 and 6 core chips more. They will have less cache to start with, and there doesn't appear to be any really highly clocked chips which makes me suspicious of the upper clock speed limits of this architecture. The fact any of the 8 cores struggle to clock beyond 4ghz without extreme voltages also leave me with questions over the ultimate overclocking performance of Ryzen.

AMD also need to deliver this design with integrated graphics. This is a critical part of the overall market. 8 cores are in reality a very small niche for consumers. By far and away the biggest market is for duals and quads with integrated graphics, OEM vendors and notebooks. In order to really disrupt Intel's dominance then the mainstream quads and notebook parts have to measure up. We'll wait and see.

Yep totally, it's clear that the power is there, I'm not seeing all the computer softwares utilising all of that power but it is definitely there, so I'll buy one, and I hope the updates and optimisations comes, if it doesn't I don't care, it's already delivering more than 120FPS in any game in 1080p, that's with a GTX TITAN X, but guess what, my monitor is 75hz and I can't see me with a TITAN X anytime soon so it's more than enough, now my 3D renders in the other hand will get a nice BIG bump in performance, that Intel just can't deliver in a price that fits my pocket.

Re: QOTW: Has AMD Ryzen lived up to your expectations?

I was expecting slightly lower IPC per core than Intel, and that is what they delivered. The single thread performance is fine though, good enough for my needs.

I wonder if the slightly high idle power is down to AMD sending out high end motherboards with all sorts of features on them. Each chip on the motherboard is a few watts, and they add up pretty fast. You probably want an A300 board for low power consumption

Edit: Phoronix have some graphs where they run code compiled with GCC with different flags; normal, bulldozer or zen. Same code, quite a big spread of performance in some cases. That will always be a problem with AMD, if games are carefully optimised for Intel then they are unlikely to work as well on someone else's pipeline.

I had no expectations - I hoped it would be decent and I'm not disappointed, but I'd like to see a review of the 1700 and how that stacks up against the 7700k.

Pretty much exactly what I expected in terms of technology. Slightly inferior technically but close enough not to matter.

The prices surprised me though, I'd expected them to be higher at the top end. Even the low end seems pretty generous if rumours are correct.

Re: QOTW: Has AMD Ryzen lived up to your expectations?

It has exceeded expectations. I'm just not sure what it's target market is. Currently, the 7700k is better for gaming and cheaper, so it's not that. The lower level Ryzen chips won't be better either unless they can clock them higher.

I am impressed though but I won't be buying one. I have never invested in the first gen of a new chip.

Agreed - they also seem to support ECC RAM, which would be interesting for say a home build of FreeNAS etc.

The 1800X's multi-threaded performance is pretty much on part with Broadwell-E (I'm running a 6850K), so for content-creators it sounds like a decent option? The only reason I say this is because the CPU/Mobo combo when comparing a 6900K vs 1800X, there's a fair bit of savings to be had.

That said, along with EFI improvements, AIO (liquid) cooler support will improve into the coming months (or so I hope); also kinks with DDR4 support and running clock-speeds should be interesting to see.

I just recently built both a 6850K X99 rig and a 6700K Skylake/Z170 box - so I'm good for the 'next couple' of years in terms of rigs (I also run an iMac 5K, plus laptop)- would be interesting to see how the AM4 platform evolves, and more importantly, stacks up against Cannon Lake and Intel's future optimisations.

Re: QOTW: Has AMD Ryzen lived up to your expectations?

I pre-ordered the 1800X top Gigabyte AM4 board because I have a sense of adventure. The only thing that has me wishing, is that it ran a little cooler but I'm coming from a 4/4 cpu world so maybe I'm wishing over nothing much. The other little hiccups with SMT and memory timings are what happen with every new platform and will be sorted in short order I'm sure.

I Photoshop (digital compositions) and mostly a MMO gamer. I am after the 4k/60fps in game. The Division by Ubisoft which I'm into atm runs across all core/threads and with a new 1080Ti will hit the mark.

Very happy with what AMD has given me.

For gaming nope, with the severe SMT issues compared especially to Kaby Lake. Its probably less of an issue on the 8C model since you can disable SMT. The lower core models we will need to wait and see.

But with AMD launching the CPU before proper windows scheduler updates, with buggy motherboards, etc,I hope review sites re-bench a few months from now since it will do better.
Keep in mind that the Windows/Linux Kennel Drivers well need to be update in order to make better use of this newer hardware and same apply to any game they to will also have up date in order to make better use of the new hardware.
The only disappoints I see is lack PCIe 3.0 and Quad Channel Memory support

yes for the most part, my biggest concern is power consumption although it's not a deal breaker. Looking forward to the release of their server CPUs

Assuming you meant PCIe 4? Pretty sure I saw PCIe 3x support on the Crosshair Asus boards.
