Remember? I still have, operational, an Apple II which, IIRC, was a 6502 processor, though I also had (have) the optional Z80 processor board so I could run CP/M.

It's not exactly my daily go-to machine, though.

I do still use a Core 2 system, though. I'd have to go check to be sure, but I think it's a Q9550S processor. And yeah, 4GB DDR2, like a few others here.

And it still runs just about everything I need, at a perfectly acceptable speed.

    Cores? 4, I 'spose.

    Threads? Hah, new-fangled techy things.

40/40 - I have HT disabled. It's sufficient I guess, but for what I do (chess), I could always make use of more

Had 6C/12T a few years back before "upgrading" to Skylake 4C/8T because of improved IPC and efficiency giving same overall performance.

Still desperately waiting for Skylake-E/X 6-8C+ since the games I play are heavily CPU bound.

For everything else, 4C/8T is sufficient.

still rockin' a 4 core Phenom II 920 from 2009 with DDR2 (remember that ) memory running at a whopping 800mhz.

coupled with a 750ti it still plays everything up to witcher 3 on high settings. why upgrade to anything newer? this still works and you cant even tell the SSD is only running at sata2 speeds.
BAH! If I hadn't sold it, I'd still have a Slot 1 800MHz Pentium III, and 512MB of SD-RAM (not even DDR, let alone your "fancy-schmancy" DDR2). My first PC had an even older 486-DX2 66MHz CPU, and 16MB of EDO RAM. You and your "4 core" CPU are too fancy compared to the old school single core stuff...

My current CPU is a 4C/8T Xeon E3-1230 v3. My next one will be the Ryzen 7 1700X, a lovely little 8C/16T piece of AMD goodness.

Ahem ... but you have sold it.

One of the machines I do still have, running and in use as a server, is dual-processor PII-550, with 256MB. It also has a 6-drive SCSI Raid-5 array, with one drive configured as a hot-swap, and several more drives and two controllers in a cupboard as spares.

I remember the 486-DX2 though. I too had one. It was my fourth PC, after an 8086, Dell 286 (12Mhz, IIRC) and a 386-16 that Dell supplied to replace the 286 when it crapped out under warranty.

My daily driver is still a Core2Quad Q9450. Overclocked to 3.65GHz, but other than that, it's still a 9-year-old CPU. Runs pretty much anything decently.

As such, my desktop has 4c4t.

My desk on the other hand, currently has 8c16t, as that's where my new, shiny Ryzen 7 1700X is sitting in wait of a motherboard.

Mine might be the Q9450 too. I'm really not sure. But it is the 'S' variant, which has a lower thermal profile. I did OC it a fair bit, and it coped well, but then I backed it off to a more modest level. And that's where it's been for years, stable, solid and reliable.

Re: QOTW: How many cores/threads does your desktop CPU have?

16c/16t at the moment, got HT disabled as was worried about the CPU temps and not much uses that many cores anyway.

Dual Xeon 2670's at the moment, £150 in total for both chips. Now that's value!

8c/8t FX-8150. Bought it in the hope that multi threaded gaming would become king. Still does a fine job to be fair and overclocks quite nicely. Though I will be upgrading fairly soon not decided between an i7 or a Ryzen 8c/16t yet.

If it were not for the fact I game, and maybe a bit of the image editing stuff, the Llano A6 3670K I won a few years ago on Hexus, still handles general stuff fine:

    http://forums.hexus.net/reader-revie...ew-thread.html

I upgraded it to 8GB RAM recently and for a CPU which was worth not more than £70 at the time I am still impressed at how long it has lasted.
