At first glance, I thought it was a motherboard with a built-in cassette drive.

Beat me to it. I was off to grab a pencil. *hint hint*
I couldn't wait for this to be announnced, but the price is overkill. I'll be sticking with my plan to get the Maximus IX Formula.
For half the price it comes with a factory fitted EK waterblock, add a, £60 EK for the CPU and you still saved a pile of cash. Plus Formula looks sexier in my opinion, with all the shielding aroud PCI slots.

Perhaps it is intended to remind older gamers of loading Spectrum games?

No, that was the alternate (and later) future that IBM stomped on when they signed a CD-Rom deal with Sony.
