That'll be £999 in the UK then. I do like this a lot - it's veeerry pretty, but I'm not sure what's going on with Microsoft's branding at the moment. Surface Book? Surface Laptop? Surface Pro? I understand the hardware differences (sort of), but it still doesn't make an awful lot of sense.

My first thought is wow, that's expensive then you think it's the same price as an Air, that's not that bad, lighter longer battery, more modern GPU/CPU but starting at only 4gb of RAM is silly.

Re: Surface Laptop revealed at #MicrosoftEDU Event

Watched the stream and thought yeah it looks gorgeous, nice specs but it's saddled with gimped windows 10S unless you upgrade meaning extra cost to get full windows so you can make use of the hardware(getting pro is supposedly free till end of year though)

Then I see the price, which we all know will be £1000 for the base spec with the i5/4GB/128GB config and then laughs because that is seriously expensive considering it's being sold with windows 10S... which is designed to compete with chromebooks...

Now I can get a surface pro 4 (admittedly old hardware but the price hasn't really changed since release) for around £780 with the keyboard & pen (which I bet is extra on this new one) so why is a laptop (an arguably more familiar design) is likely going to cost 25% more...oh and we even get a full windows with the surface pro lol

Do I want one.. yes, would I pay the price they're asking for what I deem a minimum spec in 2017 (i5/8GB/256GB @ $1300...so £1300)... hell no, not even if it came with full windows.

(That is a limited time offer, to be fair - normally £949)

Students in America must be a lot better off than in the UK, or is $999 not expensive these days.

Comparing the two, the Air will have a notably slower CPU, but the air's got more RAM, the air however has a slightly smaller screen, the air weighs more and has a shorter battery life.

However, it's probably not going to be until August you can even buy the Surface Laptop in the UK anyway. But if like the US and it's to be priced exactly the same as the air, then this could be quite good, a 13" MBP costs more in the US than the top Surface book, despite the Surface book having better specs.

Also it's worth noting, that if you buy the laptop before the end of the year, you will be able to upgrade it to "Windows 10 Pro" for free. I've no idea what MS are doing with the windows 10 S thing.

I read on another site that students can claim back the cost of laptops at the moment in the US, either directly or against taxes. No idea how accurate that is.

Re: Surface Laptop revealed at #MicrosoftEDU Event

It's a good Macbook competitor, keep in mind PC's are not popular with students and are steadily losing ground under assault from cheap Chromebooks at the low end and Macbooks at the high end.

The article leaves out a whole bunch stuff MS showed about Windows 10 S and it's usefulness to school IT shops, that that primary draw at the low end. Is also handy for those to have incompetent relatives and need an easy to use PC they wont break.

You can pay $50 to upgrade to Win10 Pro from the S version if you find Win Store too limiting.

In theory it shouldn't be too bad, alcantara is what's used in some cars for their 'suede' fabric and basically a plastic 'fabric' so won't stain like leather etc can.
