QOTW: Would you be comfortable using Windows 10 S?

Or is being locked exclusively to the Windows Store too big a limitation?

Re: QOTW: Would you be comfortable using Windows 10 S?

Far too much of a limitation.

Was trying to think if any windows device I owned (PC, Laptop, 2in1) could get by with it and I don't think I could. Just like the flexibility and option to have the things I want on it the way I want it.

No! It is promoting the use of locked down operating systems whereby you can only use software approved by the owner of said system and limits/hinders progression, it is all about control and I hate it.

Re: QOTW: Would you be comfortable using Windows 10 S?

I owned a dell venue 8 pro for a few years, and owned it from the start. on small devices with celeron/atom processors UWP absolutly run faster. I would only use windows 10 s on a devices like this. The idea of running windows 10 S on the new surface laptop seems stupid. But then again for 50 bucks to upgrade to windows 10 pro isnt bad. This will be a threat to general macbook users, because if it is only UWP it will run fast and be very efficient. and with this running on normal processors instead of arm processors there are way more options. I believe that with windows build we will learn more about UWP containers being able to run android apps, and maybe (but not likely) ios apps. Also the idea of having 32bit apps running inside of the UWP container could be presented strongly. This is more than windows rt 2.0, it really does seem like chromebook os except with windows apps and upgrade paths. for the general user this really will work great. I'd buy a windows 10 s machine if it fit in my backback for school, but the price would have to be below 250. This makes way more sense as a productivity device than the ipad pro and I think it will sell well this august. But Microsoft can't afford to screw up their marketing on this one.

But on the flip side, does the Windows Store offer everything you need?
    Of course not!!!!!!!!
    This is simply ridiculous....

Steam, Origin, Uplay, VLC, WhatsApp, Skype... I could probably name a hundred common(ish) apps on mobile or desktop platforms that many people use but probably wouldn't find in the WinStore....

Students likely using stats and research apps, musicians using tab and recording apps, gamers all over the place...

    No.
    Just no.

Re: QOTW: Would you be comfortable using Windows 10 S?

    It depends on use case.

As a portable device, maybe. I owned a Surface RT for a year and it worked really well as a portable tablet device with office built in..at the time my work laptop was a beast so I would take the RT to client meetings etc and it was absolutely fine. You have office, Skype, Whatsapp, casual games, Tabbing/music/paint/photoshop apps etc...So maybe, if I couldn't afford a "proper" machine/OS.

As a desktop/home use machine? No, as I play a lot of games and as a result need the freedom to run games/steam and the like

Re: QOTW: Would you be comfortable using Windows 10 S?

Nope not on something like the surface laptop/pro because with that hardware I'd likely end up using it for work with things adobe photoshop cs6 that came before cc and will NEVER be in the store. There's no guarantee things like full photoshop etc will go into the store either.
Then there's all the little 'helper programs' that we install like in my case shark007 codec pack and drivers for some things which are not in windows update.

Then there's steam store which likely won't go there either.

On a 'consumption tablet' ie like a windows iPad...maybe but I would need to be able to install the browser of my choice (firefox) and set it as default which you can't, and you can't change the search engine in edge either apparently.

Re: QOTW: Would you be comfortable using Windows 10 S?

    Absolutely not.

This is the core reason i've never owned an Apple phone (whilst a little fiddly to get not-store apps going, it's very doable on android).
And also the reason i use a 11-12" laptop over a tablet of any type (I want to run things other than mobile apps)

At this point i'd treat a device with 10 S as an essentially blank device i'd need to find a working OS for before it's really usable.

it's a clear case of locking it down so you spend money with them ..

No. The Windows Store is a complete disaster. And I have absolutely zero interest in being stuck in Microsoft's service bubble.

It's 'unlockable' so they're probably covered there.

Re: QOTW: Would you be comfortable using Windows 10 S?

No chance ! the windows store is a compete mess with apps for phones mixed up with pc aplications to the point where nobody has a clue, most of what it offers is simply spam or useless wares not fit to be sold.

Windows 10 pro is at the limit where I draw the line any more locked and I'm off to use linux or windows 7 again.

Can I install Linux on the machine, or is the boot loader locked down?

Because I'm not comfortable using any Windows 10 variant really.

Re: QOTW: Would you be comfortable using Windows 10 S?

No, windows 10 is bad enough as it is regarding choice (or lack of when it comes to updates) let alone being tied to the windows store. That was one of the first things I uninstalled after getting 10 up and running so why would I ever want to be tied to it?

Re: QOTW: Would you be comfortable using Windows 10 S?

Considering I won't even use the regular Windows 10 (Pro) I'm not even sure how I should classify my stance on Windows 10 S.

As for the "unlockable" part, it's only free for the first year. Which begs the question: What were the people at Microsoft smoking when they thought it would be a good idea to bundle what is basically a Windows "Starter Edition" with high-priced hardware like the Surface Laptop.
