Other than bragging rights, what do individuals actually need really hairy-chested, muscle-bound processors for?

My old boss takes 4K raw (soon to be 8K raw) footage from his drones from events and other places that purchase his drone based recording services. He purchases the beefiest top of the range processor to crunch those renders. If he doesn't have something that can operate at near lagless input/output when he is working on his recording, then it causes him a lot of trouble. I think he's using a dual Xeon E5 Dell Workstation at the moment.

I think this coming years refresh will be a difficult choice for him with Threadripper and Intels ThreadRipoff. Will come down to numbers and price/perf.
