    IDF August 2005 :: A Better BIOS?

    With all of the enhancements in systems today it is a suprise that we still have to use the DOS styled BIOS to configure and give our systems the performance edge.

    Intel are driving towards having a better BIOS there will be full support within the next Windows Operating system - Vista.

    I can remember ages ago my mate had a P3 system with a full mouse driven gui bios.
    It may have been an Intel board.

    I don't see why my Amiga A1200 circa 1994 should have a gui bios, but my PC circa 2004 (based on hardware) doesn't. I mean for crying out load we still need floppy disks to install raid controllers. Part of the problem is the more modern replacements have never been as reliable as they could be. I still use keyboards across PS2 instead of USB, USB in general is not as reliable or as "plug and play" is it could be. It is why we still see PS2, serial and floppy connectors hanging around long after their sell by date. The same is true for the bios, something that still looks like it is just out of the Arc. Then again I am describing the negative side of the win/x86 platform's great strength backward compatibility.

    Gunbuster. An old socket 7 system I have used to have a GUI, mouse driven CMOS setup. However, when I flashed the BIOS to a newer version, there wasn't space on the EEPROM for the GUI, so they ditched it for text.

    a widnows bios surely wouldnt work?
    once you made a chnge you'd have to do a full reset for it to take effect surely?
    And then what if you'd pushed the fbs too hgih and it didnt boot....no battery cmos reset on the mobo, as bios is now intergrated into windows!!!
