AMD price drops to follow Conroe launch

The good folks over at DailyTech have obtained AMD memos, revealing that once Conroe rears its head, AMD will start slashing CPU prices.
The memos that DailyTech has secured are between AMD and Japanese system manufacturers and indicate the following price cuts will become effective July 24th, 2006:

    * AMD Athlon 64 price cuts will receive price cut up to 30%
    * AMD Athlon 64 X2 will receive price cuts up to 50%
    * AMD Sempron processors will receive price cuts up to 15%
    More over at DailyTech.

It means *up to* 50%, which means 50% is the largest drop, not all the decreases will be uniform. As for all the dual cores, that seems unlikely, as the Opterons aren't mentioned.

I hope for AMDs sake that this is just a stopgap measure until they've got some serious competition for Conroe's performance. That said, they must know they can't take Intel on in a price war and hope to succeed.

However, lower prices are obviously good for us, looks like I might be building my new AM2 based rig sooner than I thought

any idea when this will happen??? I'm hoping to buy a socket 939 system soon, most of the single cores have dropped in price (all except the one I wanted - the 3700+ grrrrrrr)

thanks chuckskull.......are there any predictions to how much the new conroe processors will be?? Also how much better are they than standard processors. I mean will there be sub £200 conroes that blow any other sub £200 processor out the water.

I was looking at a s939 system as mentioned in an earlier post, but if conroe isn't rediculously expensive, maybe i will wait and go intel for once!!!

No ide how much it will cost, but if you build an S939 it's never likely to see anything faster than a X2 4400+ (FX chips hold there value for years), new socket = new processors every few months for a while yet.

I'm guessing, but you're probably looking at an extra £20-50 on the mobo, and processor depends on the speed obviously, but a low end conroe will probably hammer the similarly priced Athlon.

If you're on a budget go for 939 while it's cheap, if you can spare a bit more get the conroe.

My 939 system will prbably last me a year or two yet, (with upgrades) before I need a new machine from scratch.

thats the problem. I could buy cheap no, and the money I save, spend on a ninja graphics card, or i could wait for conroe......but then maybe AMDs retaliation will be soon after so i'll wait again!

I think i'll stick to s939, get me 3800+ and when the duel cores drop in price get one of them. I'm sure with a good graphics card i.e.7900gt and above a s939 processor will still cut the mustard for a while yet!

I'm running on a single core athlon and a 7800GT, and I'm yet to find a game I cant put on high settings and 1600x1200 with smooth framerates.

That sounds like a good system, make sure you get a Sli motherboard and PSU, that way in 6 months when another new nvidia card is out you can pick up a cheap 7900GT and drop it in the second slot.

Thats good to know, i bet the low end dual core will drop the lowest like 10% and the most expensive dropping 50%

Ah well no mention of opterons, means used prices will still be high-ish

I'll see how the prices are, they'll decide whether i go dual core or not
    Thanks,

Makes sense the Optys aren't dropping, AMD have been pushing the prices UP on them recently after all. Attempt to get people to start buying their desktop lines again.

Any idea if the UK will follow the same sort of price drop pattern? Was going to buy from the US when I go in the beginning of July but I'll probably wait a little longer now.

US tends to be cheaper, about 17.5% cheaper

Which site will you buy from, if you go down the US route? Does it make a difference, most of the sites do not ship to the UK. Cheers
