Excellent review Hexus. Style, content, all there

Though some of us have older warriors than just four year old machines

Intel do need some competition in this market - I can't imagine it's costing them a huge amount over the 45nm chips so as you say, they've got nice margins simply because they can more or less charge what they like. Yet if you need 6 cores then it's far better economics to go with AMD, and if you need clock speed then it's far better to go with a different Intel chip.

I think Bulldozer will challenge this kind of level, but 8 cores for less money will be far more attractive, the question is what Intel will do at the time - it's so far away they could either drop the prices on this part or maybe 2011 sandy bridge will be making an appearance.

Re: Reviews - Intel Core i7 970 CPU review: six cores for £680

Hmmm.... It's very fast and shiny and all, but at this price it's surely pointless? If you can afford this then you can afford the 980X, which is fundamentally a faster chip - so why would you buy this one?? I think even 3 out of 5 is a bit generous frankly.

Plus the naming policy is almost NVidia-grade stupid

Is Hexus still going to review the 95W version of the Phenom II X6 1055T??

I was thinking of making an Intel machine but thank you for this review.. you have totally sold me on the Phenom II X6 1090T, its the third best processor and right behind i7 970 but costs only a fraction of the price, just £225! Here comes another AMD machines!

It does look to me that AMD is the way to go right now, but my Q9550 isn't really holding me back yet.

It's still a fine chip that benchmarks within a few per cent of the 980X. We can see people in the workstation environment - where heavy multitasking is the norm - going for something like this if the budget doesn't allow for a 980X, because they're getting practically the same stock performance for £100 less, and that £100 could go towards, say, doubling the RAM.

We don't think it's pointless, but we really wish Intel would release a mid-priced version of Gulftown.

They seem to be leaving that market to spare 45nm stock and AMD. I don't know why they abandoned 4 core gulftown - they have the equivalent in server space so why not desktop?

Re: Reviews - Intel Core i7 970 CPU review: six cores for £680

Think this is just for those who absolutely must have the latest hardware. Be interested to see the results vs an overclocked 920 at the a common overclocked value such as 4.0 or 4.2 Ghz. Let's face it, most people who've bought a core i7 system and an i7 920 will not be running it at stock..

Even so, think I'll be waiting for the price to drop or a second to appear on ebay, or deal fo theday on scan a way off from now. I'd wager that I'd not see any performance benefit over my 920 @ 4.2Ghz in 90% of things.

Re: Reviews - Intel Core i7 970 CPU review: six cores for £680

Actually, thinking about it the pricing is probably in line with the equivalent Xeon model (X5680) so that there's no cross polination of people buying server chips for their home computer cheaper than the retail model. Lets face it, what is the difference REALLY. Optimised for servers my ar$e! Optimised for profit.

£680 is still far too pricey - if someone is prepared to pay that much, then they'll probably pay more and get the 980.
