    Nice review

Our custom Iometer test bombards each drive with a random spread of 4K reads and writes, and though it bears little resemblance to real-world use, it can demonstrate a drive's ability to cope in a worst-case scenario.
Well, there is an ever-growing use for data storage that follows that pattern now.....virtual disk storage. Nice to see that as it was exactly what I was looking for

edit - It would be nice if the mass number of issues with Sandforce drives got a mention in the intro.

Its a shame they've set the price so high. Would be nice to see this come in lower and maintain the trend of lower SSD prices, this kinda sticks us back 12 months.

Re: Reviews - Samsung SSD 840 PRO Series (512GB)

70p a gig is pretty good, and for that lower end performance I think it's justified against it's contenders. Still too much for me to want to RAID them for that 1TB grail, that's the end goal as soon as the price drops below 50-40p/Gb

You want performance that puts all others drives to shame, the lowest power usage AND low prices?

    You greedy bugger.

Think i will get me one of these instead of the 830, unless the 830 drops in price further

    Great Review.
However I doubt I'll be getting one at the price they are. I'll just stick with OCZ for the moment

Re: Reviews - Samsung SSD 840 PRO Series (512GB)

The obvious becomes apparent now as to why the 830 had been on offer at times on various sites and is currently offered with £20 casback making the current 256 GB 830 around £130. One would expect to see that price reduce now even more.
Having recently purchased the 830 it performs well and its Samsung reputation for reliability that swayed me towards the 830 rather than a Sandisk Extreme and delibarately avoiding OCZ who need to rebuild a tarnished reputation.
Anyone buying the 830 on the current cashback offer should be aware that there is an (approx) one month wait before you can claim the cashback on the online form and you only have a window of opportunity of 16 days in which to claim it once your invoice date appears on the claim form. The invoice date does disappear after 16 days. Its not something made plain by Samsung or by any of the online retailers.

    My new SSD right there

Time could reveal that the new NAND could have issues though, you never know!

Thanks for the tip on the cashback. I've been looking for an SSD to migrate my "Apps" partition to (OS is on a small Vertex2E), and I've got to say that I'm impressed with the 830's that got put into two laptops here as boot drives.

So if the 840 Pro forces the 830's to become cheaper then I'm going to welcome it. Heck, since Amazon are doing a 128GB 830 for less than £90 then I'm giving serious consideration to getting a 128 and a 256 and replacing my (Sandforce!) Vertex too.

I don't need "ultimate performance", and I'd be more than happy to swap a few thousand IOP's for a promise of increased reliability.

    Good review by the way!

Got a Samsung 830 myself and now I understand why they're selling it off. It's a brilliant SSD itself but wow, the Samsung 840 just raised the bar!

I'm not sure that's the reason, the 840 Pro is not a replacement for the 830.
The regular 840 is, but I doubt we will see any major differences in performance over the existing 830.
