    Re: Reviews - AMD Radeon R9 290

IIRC,some of the hotter running HD7870 cards drew more power even though they had the same clockspeeds,GPU voltage and PCB as other models. If custom cooled models do run cooler,I expect lower power consumption, unless these cards are pre-overclocked above 1GHZ.

Having said that the R9 290 sample TPU tested, had power consumption which was not much more than a GTX780,Geforce Titan or HD7970GE:

    http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/R9_290/24.html

They also only look at graphics card power consumption.

Also, they tested another R9 290X sample, which was from Sapphire and not AMD,and it consumed much less power too:

    Re: Reviews - AMD Radeon R9 290

It's pretty much the same story as for the 290X release - about the only problems people have with the card come down to the less-than-stellar reference cooler. Power consumption can drop *significantly* with lower temperatures, and there are already plenty of sites placing power consumption below the Nvidia competition. This is a £310 card matching or beating a £400 card, despite the throttling impacting performance.

I just don't get why AMD would choose to face the inevitable bad press by forcing this frankly inadequate stock cooler. As others have said, it's very easily solved with the non-reference coolers, but the headlines are made on release day!

Nope, it's certainly *not* some 'cheap trick' in order to compete with Nvidia at all, that's some nonsensical fanboy rumour that keeps rearing its head. They gain *nothing* from allowing the GPUs to run this hot, it would be no big deal cooling it to what people would consider acceptable temps, and it will likely perform better due to less throttling. Heat = power draw, since this card draws a similar amount of power to a 780, it makes little sense to suggest the GPU itself is hotter running somehow. The potentially higher heat density may mean slightly higher comparable temperatures (for example like IVB vs SNB, albeit probably not as extreme), but it's still something that could be worked around by partners.

Oh and spending an extra ~£100 to save on power bills makes little sense - you'd have to be maxing the card 24/7 for a few years to approach making that difference back.

Are there any estimates on when we'll start to see non reference boards?

It seems like this time they really have had to cut corners on the cooling to make it competitive.

In what way have they cut corners on the cooling? The cooler is at least as good as the one they've provided on all their previous cards.

Yes, it looks like they learned a lesson from 7970 vs 680 in that they don't want Nvidia to know too far in advance what they are up to. But the problem with keeping it all secret is that that means not letting AIBs know early, which in turn means no decent coolers at or near launch.

The other lesson from the Kepler launch they don't seem to have learned: come out with a polished part, get great reviews and reap the rewards from those who don't read more recent reviews. Or who rely on out-dated benchmarks like AT Bench etc.

yep when I can get a water block that fits for sure .. may have a punt at this .. my 5870 is old but still good .. the 290 with block and a quad rad or even 2 .. hmmm might just keep this beast under 55 deg c

    Re: Reviews - AMD Radeon R9 290

Interestingly Hexus, TPU and computerbase all use CryEngine games to test power draw, and get the R9 290 much higher than GTX780/Titan. Tom's use Metro: Last Light and get R9 290 lower than GTX780/Titan. Suggests that maybe - just maybe - reviewers should be comparing power draw over a much wider range of games...

Very true, after all we wouldn't expect to see a review containing FPS results from only one game.

    Re: Reviews - AMD Radeon R9 290

Hmmm, I just remembered I did this

If you take a peek at my A6-3670k reader review you'll see that I monitored power draw over all three games I tested and peak power draw for the two platforms was hit in different games. I reckon we're being stinted of the full picture by so many reviews using a "representative" power draw load rather than measuring throughout the benchmarking process. Be very interested to see peak power draw figures for each game reviewed....

    Re: Reviews - AMD Radeon R9 290

I really WANT a new GPU but i would be foolish to get one before the non-reference cards come out.

Once they are out need to see some comparisons between the non-reference 290 Pro and 290X then make some decisions

kW/h (W/h maybe) would be a better metric you reckon then Jim? I don't go for this peak business; thouexcept when deciding on which PSU you should buy.

    Re: Reviews - AMD Radeon R9 290

both. You want to know absolute peak draw to spec PSU correctly, but for efficiency you want long-term average. This day and age with data logging being so easy you'd think they could offer the stats more fully - peak, average, standard deviation, RMS etc. Frankly it wouldn't be beyond folk to test in game performance and display FPS rate and power draw against time on the same charts. Now that would be interesting n'est pas?

The reference coolers will certainly make this a much better graphics card.
