Too pricey imo these Steam Machines, the Steam OS has yet to prove itself too. I'll stick with a standard Windows PC for now.

I will bet you that Microsoft wont sit on their ass while that happens either.....
This is the key point. Without competition from Valve, Microsoft would absolutely be sitting on their backside doing nothing for PC gamers.

Just look at DirectX. Microsoft did nothing to improve DirectX11 as there was no competition. The moment AMD announced Mantle you could see the panic from Microsoft that their monopoly was in danger so they started pouring money and resources into DirectX again and now we have DirectX12.

We need competition for PC gaming to succeed. The current dominance by Microsoft isn't healthy.

Valve has made amazing progress on SteamOS/Linux gaming. Between now and 2 years ago the difference is incredible.
As a PC gamers I can't wait to see what improvements we see next in SteamOS/Linux. Because as the performance improves the pressure builds on Microsoft to improve performance on Windows too. Right now no matter what OS you use you aren't seeing the full potential of your hardware. This should hopefully change in the not too distant future.

I think Valve have been key to getting a lot of games transferred over to Linux. I properly starting using Linux at the start of 2012 for all none related games stuff and booting back into Windows for playing games. Since then the amount of games have exploded on Linux and I've been fortunate enough that the games I really care about have Linux versions. For me, Linux became a viable alternative for gaming about one year ago

If someone had said that 1000's of Linux games would be available a few years back folks would have just laughed in your face.

I agree with a lot of the comments already posted by others in that £850 would build you a lovely small form factor gaming rig with some H2O cooling thrown in and still have money left over.

Feel free to post a list of components that you think would make a better PC. If you want it to be as fast as this one, then having a 970 and an i5 means a lot of the budget is gone straight away.

Check out the one by Zotac. It's tiny in comparison.
