Also there are loads of cool planes flying around here, I've seen Eurofighters, Typhoons and the occasional Chinook although all of those have probers gone to Afghanistan. You do know the SBS is based in Poole? If you go out into Poole harbour in the evenings you can see the Special Forces guys going flat out in their black speed boats.

At least in this country; Germany don't call them Typhoons since the MKI's were used in WWII.Chinooks are based at Odiham, which is only up the road towards Basingstoke. Plus, there's the helicopter servicing place in Yeovil. My Dad lives in Tolpuddle, and the Hercs like to use that area for low flying practise sometimes ![]() Best place is Lincolshire. You've got Typhoons, Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and the Red Arrows all based there.

Lots of passing trade from Merlin, Army Lynx, Apache and Chinook too, plus the odd C-17 moving aircraft to and from operational theatres. Plus the Fleet Air Arm Historical Flight - Sea Fury, Sea Hawk, 'Stringbag', and a SeaFire (although I don't think that belongs to the FAA Historical Flight). Yeovilton Air Day is on 5th July for anyone interested, but the FAA Museum here is always worth a visit - they have one of the original prototype Concordes as well as lots of Naval aircraft which are very accessible to the public. Incidentally, I'm not a FAA or even Royal Navy man just in case this sounds too much like an advert! Army aviation (engineer) if you must know, I just happen to be stationed at Yeovilton

re: HEXUS.social - RAF Air Tattoo?
Would it be a bad idea to miss the first hour/hour and a half of the airshow display?
It starts at 9:45 but i was planning to get there for about 11:15 do you think i will miss something important? or do they normally save the good stuff to the afternoon? |

Not sure what it's like there (so far managed to miss it every year), but if it's like the other airshows, the traffic will be an absolute nightmare. I wouldn't be surprised if you planned on getting there @ 0945, you might get through the gates @ 1100.
As for the programme, I have no idea what they will plan to do. Normally you get the crap at the start, purely because they know people will still getting in at that time. Would also make sense to leave the best until the end to keep people hanging around until then.

re: HEXUS.social - RAF Air Tattoo?
If you can, go to a park and ride nearby and get the shuttle bus from Swindon. That is by far the easiest option as traffic will be a biatch.
As for the programme, it tends to be a few prop displays mixed with a few other aircraft in the morning, some display teams around midday with some of the more well known jets. The good stuff is always in the afternoon. You've got the Red Arrows, the Eurofighter, F22 and all the other airshow stalwarts like the F16, F18, etc. From the 2003 program ( i don't think it's changed much) 10am - Introduction and a display flight 10.25am - Solo displays, including an F16A, MiG-29, Hawk T1a 11.15 - Sea aircraft 12.25 - Heavy duty aircraft 1pm - display team 1.15 - lunch displays, nothing majorly interesting 2.05 - red arrows 2.35 - "The Jet Age", F18, F4, F16, MiG 29, Mirage 2000 4pm - coalition aircraft, tornado, B52, A-10A thunderbolt, Eurofighter, F-117a, B1-B Lancer, B2 bomber Obviously the themes change, and this was specifically about 100 years of flight. But the principle is the same, they start of slow and build up to the main events. This year, it's going to probably culminate in the F22 display.

Nope.
At least it's certainly looking like I won't at the moment.

Not sure about that. Needless to say though, bring earplugs and ear defenders if you have them!

re: HEXUS.social - RAF Air Tattoo?
They have so many fast-jets at Fairford that your ears will buzz for the next couple of days so do yourself a favour and protect them from the loudest (we're talking B1-B Lancer, F-22, Harrier, Vulcan - but I very much doubt it will make an appearance).
The F-22 will be a treat but American routines are always so conservative.
To err is human. To really foul things up ... you need a computer.

re: HEXUS.social - RAF Air Tattoo?
Can't believe they ended up cancelling the whole weekend! Can understand it though; trying to park thousands of cars on muddy fields just wouldn't work. I believe Waddington Airshow last year was cancelled because of the rain.
