moving advert in quick reply box - The witcher

I know that you guys don't always have control over the adverts that get put on the site, but please please can you try and do something about the moving flash advert next to the quick reply box?

Placing an advert there was bad enough but I've got used to that now and it doesn't bother me anymor but the moving one now is *really* distracting

Would be great if you can sort it.

    Cheers

well most adverts are more subtle and might make you think about said product without even realising it..but this one is just plain annoying, and has the exact opposite effect

    hi Spud,

Thanks for your take - I will be on this first thing Monday, I appreciate you posting this since feedback is useful - it's how we make this place better!

    cheers

    DR

    Also - re jay_oasis

Thanks Jay, I really appreciate you promoting how to block adverts on the HEXUS site - I'm pleased that with the daily investment of time and money which HEXUS Limited and the team put in to the site is regularly being taken advantage of by people like you, most people enjoy the services in their local villages, such as shops and post offices - just like others enjoy the facilities and content which HEXUS gives you - however I'd assume that you would happily steal from your 'local shop' if you thought you could get away with it? this post was above but Jay seems upset I edited his post to remove what he had written and put this in.

I hate to say it....but I really like it

Both the principle of a moving advery, AND that it's at the BOTTOM....

Frankly I'd like it left there....err.....right there...

Thanks Ultra - very helpful to hear! I'm glad you respect HEXUS, and the guys who work day in and day out to generate the content to support the site by viewing and showing an interest in the companies who support us commercially. I'm sure if we started to have a slower site or started blocking you from posting or reading content you'd be more than happy to complain

oh, its nothing personal, i have been using it (and other plugins that doubtless make me a terrible net citizen) before i even found hexus.

just cant stand to have my bandwidth wasted by ads to be honest. and they screw up some of my other plugins as well (in quite a bad way from previous experience)

i do try to support hexus's supporters, any company here with a support forum i have a much higher regard for (well, except maybe ati, but thats another story altogether)

I don't mind the new ads at all. Even if some people are finding them off putting, it's not like it's putting anyone off anything that can't be fixed with the push of a backspace key

How about this - we break the site deliberately if you don't display the adverts? We would no doubt get complaints. We run this place similar to honest pool - similar to how RadioHead sold their album anyway it'a always interesting to hear the people who are publically happy to promote and state that they feel it's reaosnable

Anyway enough of all of this - please don't complain to me if you have viewing issues, or problems with the site

Re: moving advert in quick reply box - The witcher

Good lord, is it really that bad?

    I think not.

HEXUS is a commercial operation, we all know that and the revenue from adverts is solely what pays my wages...

I'm getting kind of fed up with all the moaning every time we run an ad campaign, do you guys not realise that this is how we make money to be able to afford to bring HEXUS to you?

We're not a pay to view site, we rely on adverts, page impressions, click-throughs etc to bring in the cash to not only run the servers and pay the bandwidth costs but to also employ the guys, like me, who bring you the content.

Without some source of cash there'd be no CeBIT coverage, no HEXUS.tv blowing holes in stuff and no forums.

Blocking ads is cutting your nose off to spite your face, pure and simple. If you block the ads, we lose the page impressions and that affects the revenue generated by the ad.

Sure, you can sit back and say that well, it's not everyone that blocks ads so it's ok, but judging from the replies here, the general consensus is that everyone either is or should be running an ad blocker.

If that were the case, which fortunately it isn't, HEXUS would have to find more direct ways of generating revenue, such as subscriptions, or we could just do as many sites do and stick in page redirects forcing you to view an ad before continuing on to the content you want to see.

The system we have in place now is as fair as we can make it and yes, sometimes we do run distracting ads, that's the point of them, to grab your attention. But we also DO listen to constructive criticism, such as Spud's.

But, if Im honest, I'm fast losing patience with what seems to be a large 'minority' who feel that ads "steal their bandwidth", "screw up their apps" or "aren't what I come to HEXUS for"

To those readers I say this: Balls. That's the biggest load of crap I've ever heard as a flimsy defence for what you see as your right to a free web. HEXUS IS free and the adverts we run on it aren't going to bother even the most miserly of bandwidth caps or broadband speeds.

I worked on HEXUS for two moths earlier this year on nothing more than a 56k dial-up and the ads didn't bother me so the 'eats my bandwidth' argument can eat my shorts.

You want to view HEXUS without viewing the ads, that's fine, but until the boss sees this post and reins me in, I'll start excluding those selfish members dumb enough to crow about it.

Edit: I just thought of something else. The ads we run here aren't just any old ads from Cillit Bang or Glade Air Fresheners... these are ads that we feel are relevant to the readership and something that they'd be interested in. I know the bosses work hard in making sure that what ads run on the site are targeted to the readership... it's all relevant stuff, perhaps even a benefit to you guys.

And I agree, if there was sound running as default, I'd be hopping up and down about it too, like that bloody annoying mosquito one that some sites ran ages ago, so we do listen to what you guys have to say... but those that ad block... well, that's just low.

Thanks David - If it were anywhere else on the page I wouldnt make a comment, its just being in that position is really distracting so I figured no harm in asking I have no problem with say the moving corsair ad at the top of the page or any of the others, and I have found some of them useful in the past. I do know the importance of these ads, and the fact that they do work..to the point that when we get our new banners designed for my own business I think Hexus would be the perfect place for us to advertise...although thats another story which I will email you about when we get the designs finished
