    Flying Blunders

A bomb run on a transport column.

A direct hit, but in the murky weather I'd taken it in too low and get my tail and wing blown off.

Somehow I survive the impact with the ground, and brace myself as the sturdy cockpit compartment of the IL2 slides and bounces to a halt.

It finally comes to rest. The fuel tank catches fire and the plane rapidly becomes an inferno. I struggle out of the harness and flee the plane. But what's that? German tanks bearing down on me! It looks like the end boys.

If it hadn't been an IL2 you would be dead now. Nothing stronger than a good piece of Russian millitary hardware.

    they were 100 pounders

I'm not sure how low I was when I released them. It must have been less than 200 m, but I was diving slightly at the time, so would have gone lower before pulling out of the dive So I guess I'd have been at about 50m when they exploded.
