Re: Black Ops: I'm being forced to install Steam!!

There is a way to install a game that requires steam from a retail disc
    1. launch steam
    2. quit steam
    3. Windows Key+R (or go to start > run) and type in "C:\program files\steam\steam.exe -install X:" without the " " and where X: is the drive with your game disc in.
It should start installing from DVD.
tis all well documented here: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_...5357-FSQM-0382

Every time I've installed something that requires Steam, I always asked for it to run from CD, and was installed in matter of minutes, and only then d/l'd the updates from Steam.

Re: Black Ops: I'm being forced to install Steam!!

right... enough whining. ... like a big Jessie

I shall move forward and become a STEAMER,.....

(Thing is though... it took over 5 hours to install a game and I ran out of time and am working again now.... so my window of game play has gone for a burton... and I now have to wait until I have spare time again.)

I kinda like STEAM.. I was dubious when it started up, but like someone else hasd said - there's no farting about looking for patches etc because it's all kept up to date for you.

I think, also that Hex has spawned a new adjective in here - CODBLOPS as in "what a load of..."

With steam you can back up the game including patches and restore backups with a few clicks, it even gives you the option as to what size you want the backup file to be, there is no faster or easier way to backup/reinstall/copy/install to multiple pcs.
Someone left a note on a piece of cake in the fridge that said, "Do not eat!". I ate the cake and left a note saying, "Yuck, who the hell eats paper ?

    smart arse..

It was actually the steam version not setting HL to busy when I was in game, and was fixed with an upto date version of HL(same one that fixed the buttons not working in vista/7)...

Re: Black Ops: I'm being forced to install Steam!!

I agree Tumb, when Steam first came out people still had crap connections, but since speeds have gone up Steams entire point (imho) has come thru, leave it running in the background and it downloads updates etc while you check the forums before you game..

Hmmm, possibly should of resized that image, although its size does make my point in a subtle way..

Re: Black Ops: I'm being forced to install Steam!!

I agree in a lot of ways about buying the retail version and stil having to download stuff from Steam.

But, I can also see the massive advantages of Steam too. No searching for patches to play with mates who might just happen to have a patch or two ahead of you is one of the massive bonuses, if your both on Steam you are going to be playing the same version.

Think about how much of a poain in the rear end Battlefield 2 was before it got onto steam. lol.
