I guess Steam sucks if you only have one or two games, but I have over 200 games on it and I really appreciate having one place to have all my games "in the cloud" or whatever. I can login any place and just play.
Presumably after you've downloaded 500Gb.
got to love steam, time to format so you move the entire steam folder to a backup drive (unless its already on one)
reinstall steam, copy the entire folder back over and all your games are ready to play.
Capitalization is the difference between helping your Uncle Jack
off a horse and helping your uncle jack off a horse.
One big downside with steam is that now even though you own a retail box copy of Black Ops you wont be able to sell it on if you want to.
Its forever tied to your steam account even if you uninstall.
That's one downside, but there are others.
I'm still in the camp Zak was, and don't use Steam. Moreover, I won't. Not now, not ever.
Sadly, that means there are an increasing number of games I would like but won't get. If it's a choice between Game and Steam, or neither, then it's 'neither' for me. I could go through my reasons, in case anyone cares, but I've done it several times before, so if you really want to know, the forum "Search" feature is your friend.
I know there's a lot of people that actively like Steam and I'm happy for you. But it's not for me. I'm simply not prepared to put my gaming as a hostage to fortune to a company I don't want.
Hence, somewhat against my wishes, because I had intended to stay with PC gaming, I ended up buying a console.
Zak, I feel your frustration. I just hope it ends up being worth it.
This game really isnt very good anyway!
You've just given it 7/10
I am fairly happy with steam...the concept is excellent and the execution is good for most...
My main gripes though are that I can't have 2 "game stores".....i.e. all your steam games must be on the same drive.....and they don't allow multiple logins. Why can't I play Black Ops on one PC while someone else plays Shogun on another PC? I own both licenses but steam will not let me use them concurrently.

What's wrong with using Steam? I find Steam very good as you can chat to your friends in game, it downloads all the patches automatically, they have great deals over the Christmas and Summer period. Can't see why any dedicated PC gamer would have any issues with using Steam.
just because I dislike having anything running on my PC that isn't key or essential.
I like to buy a DVD game and actually own it... you know.. on the disk!
And because while I appreciate people like having all the games in one place, the long and the short of it is, I don't download purchased music either... I buy the CD. I like to own "it"
As it turns out.. I have now used Steam for downloadinf demos.. but I'd have done that direct from the game company website anyway.. so steam is now something I activate just to play.

I could leave it as that, but I will say this, owning the disk for games is always nice and am happy with the small collection of games I own on disk, but slowly replacing them with Steam copies.
Disks are now obsolete technology when everything can be stored online somewhere for you to download anywhere and at anytime.
I share the same views as Zak and dont use steam and just like saracen bought a ps3 as an alternative.
Whats worse is steam games are even more expensive than normal websites, especially on preorders.
Steam tend to charge RRP outside of their constant sales.
Many retail game keys can be registered on steam though....it is a handy place to keep your licences.....EAs Origin is trying to do the same, so you can register a lot of EA game keys there as well.
