    Company Of Heroes

Been playing the online beta and now the single player demo for around a week now, just wondered if any of you fine fellows have had a go yet?

I found it a bit hard at first, but with persistance I can beat the AI on normal difficulty... mostly.

Its not the most realistic RTS around but I think its cracking and definatly worth checking out.

I got it this morning, been playing it for about 7 hours Forgot to eat, not many games can separate my fat ass from dinner, so it must be good.

Very addictive. Shame theres only about 15 skirmish maps. The single player is lots of a fun and a challenge, which is always good, just took out a V2 base

I found myself sweating and getting really into it, earlier when I ran into two panthers with only a few rangers and a flame tank.

Was very chuffed when I won. The physics stuff really affects the tanks. Often shell will just bouce off etc. Depending on angles.

I am well and truly addicted.

What I really, really like about it is how they make me feel that each person on the map is an actual person and not just a bunch of pixels. Also how in the main campaign they didn't make the germans out to be ultra evil but human beings too.

I also love every other part of this game too

The German tanks are awesome, love the panther, and of course the Tiger. The sherman seems a little over-powerd though. it should be cheaper cost less points, and be worse.

It's fantastic, the best RTS i have played and probably on of the best games i have played period. The graphics, physics and attention to detail is incredible.

Couple of things i would change though -

The population limit is great - enough for plenty of action but low enough that you have to concentrate on individual squads and be tactical, rather that just the same old race to build as many units as posible then over-run the enemy like so many RTS's. However, i would really like to be able to 'disband' or 'send back home to mom' (i.e. like destoying your own units in C&C) so i can build a different type of unit to replace them.

Waypoints! Why no waypoints in this game? It's so annoying when you build a set of base defence, sandbags, fencing etc, only for your own tanks to run over them and destroy them!

Other than that, i love it. Bit stuck on defending that damn hill right now though.

The hill mission is hard-ish (but good fun!), I had german squads capping the strategic point at one time. I think I used the ranger unlock to reinforce in emergencies, otherwise built troops using the barracks and support centre (until they got blown up ).

AT guns on all sides are a must. Also, dont put men down in the further points - or if you do - use a sniper or two. I had men down on those far-away points and they held them off for quite a while (with some AT guns) but eventually were overrun, it then came down to me having very little on the hill itself which led to a nailbiting finish. I also had 1 howitzer on the hill, handy for bombarding entrance points to the hill.

In the briefing they said they would attack the town? They only did this once, I had like 3 squads and an AT gun down there which was a complete waste - so perhaps 1 squad will do.

I don't play many games but CoH has been great! Very addictive - I've found myself pondering ways to play missions better which is something I've not done in years.

As I don't play games much I find it very difficult.. I've not long finished the Red Ball escort and that took about 6-7 replays before I came up with a viable strategy to win.. Great game.

Company of Heroes is superb imo and i've only done the tutorial lol. I have though in the pass played so many RTS games and I had played the free game you get with CoH; Dawn of War which was good but CoH is so much better than any of the RTS games I've played before and by far the most realistic to play and view.

One thing that I've found out today is a fix (for me anyway) for a constant Crash to Desktop that was being experienced on the first level of campaign, with patch 1.3 and fresh install. Basically it'd always crash at around the same point, didn't matter what graphics settings etc. Then it twigged that it always seemed to happen at the point of an explosion or other noise involving multiple samples. Looking at the audio options, the amount of voices had been set by the automatic settings to 96. On looking at the inbuilt sound card on the AN8-SLi board I’m using, it has a max of about 36 simultaneous voices. Once I reduced the max number of in game voices to 32 the crashes have now stopped and the games finally plays without any issues :-)

    Hi All,

I got CoH over the weekend, brilliant game, but it seems to take several minutes to load a level, save and even exit back to windows! Playing the game, the speed is fine - is there something I need to set? (I'm assuming it's not hardware related)

    My PC just in case:
    Core2Duo 6600
    256MD ATI 1950 Pro
    1 GB DDR2 Corsair RAM
    Samsung 250GB Sata2 HD

Would another 1gb of RAM make a dramatic difference to the speed the game loads? (other games I have like Far Cry and Pro Evolution Soccer 6 have no long loading times)

    Many thanks
