    Handheld vacuum

    Hi all

Can anyone recommend a decent cheap-ish (sub ~ £60) handheld vacuum cleaner?

I've been looking on all the usual websites and there are loads to choose from, but a lot of them have poor reviews and/or a very short battery life between charges.

    Thanks

Cheers guys. I think I'll just go for the cheapest one then! I'm not expecting anything amazing, just thought it would be handy for the constant trail of low-level detritus that the nipper seems to leave on the carpets wherever he goes

These sometimes turn up on offer, I think I paid £70 for mine. Wonderful for getting yoghurt, pepsi etc out of carpet and furnishings: http://www.bisselldirect.co.uk/littl...-clean-machine

Otherwise, google "carpet sweeper", one of the push along jobs. Won't run out of batteries and really really cheap. Won't do yoghurt, vomit etc though.

Thanks, I actually quite like Bissells. Trouble is, we also have a 4-month old who pukes numerous times each day, so it does need to be vomit-capable unfortunately.

    Re: Handheld vacuum

These work well, but somewhat outside your budget...

(Available at other places - might pay to shop around if you are interested. My parents bought one and are quite pleased with it, but I have no direct experience)

    Sorry, I think I wasn't clear.

The Bissell is *so* vomit capable, usually cat vomit in our case. It was the cheap push along carpet cleaner I was talking about there. We have both, the carpet cleaner is handy but the Bissell gets used constantly and often in preference to kitchen roll.

You have to swill out the Bissell muck container after use, but the instructions say it is OK to leave the cleaner bottle with water and carpet shampoo in there. As the thing gets used for emergency spills and cat eruptions (the kids are old enough that they aren't really a problem any more) I just leave it ready to go. The unit is very portable, has a nice long mains cable, just right for shock deployment

So yeah it is a luxury, but it saves a lot of time and aggro and being up to your elbows in bowls of Dettol. Shame Ebuyer don't seem to have it in stock atm, they did a good price.

    Re: Handheld vacuum

Sorry, your previous post was perfectly clear - I just read it too quickly

That little green job looks quite decent actually, my only reservation is it's not cordless, unless I'm mistaken. The one peterb suggested looks good too, though more expensive again. I think I'll do some more research on both of them, and then decide how far the budget will stretch.

From all the feedback here it sounds like it's definitely not worth bothering with the cheapo ones anyway (plus I'm getting too old and impatient to faff around with stuff that doesn't work properly )

    Thanks guys

    Danny

    Lol, fair enough

No it isn't cordless. Not been a problem for me. I would hate to get half way through a carpet clean and the batteries fail leaving me with a sopping carpet, and as I said the flex is a decent length.

And how many sub-£60 handheld puke-proof Dyson portables are there?

I have a Dyson battery cleaner, and it's VERY good. It's certainly good enough for a quick whiz round daily. Or even twice daily, given that you get about 20 minutes per charge. Mind you, as you have to hold the trigger in, that's 20 mins of actual cleaning, 'cos it stops (thus saving power) the moment you let go. So you get more done than you might think.

But, £60 it ain't. Think £300-ish. And that's a different proposition. Also, I've never tried it on kiddy puke, but given the dust filters, I doubt it's designed for 'wet' use.

Don't get me wrong. I love my little Dyson to bits, because it gets the job done (astonishly, stunningly well, for a battery device) without dragging our far heavier main cleaner about. It's one of my best-ever buys, and we use it loads. But it isn't the answer here.

    Re: Handheld vacuum

Funnily enough I did consider Dyson, as our main hoover is actually a DC24. It is a nice bit of design and the ball thing definitely helps with negotiating corners. But it hasn't been the most reliable (already had 2 parts replaced in 2 years, under warranty), and Dyson kit isn't cheap either.

Shark Rocket Vacuum (HV301) is the hand held vacuum cleaners with cord known to me so far.. It has versatile floor to ceiling cleaning. This is better than I thought it would be!!It is perfect for carpet and hardwood and tile floors , very light and easy to use. The powered forward motion on carpet is wonderful!! I would recommend this Shark Rocket Ultralight to everyone.

Got my mom an AEG RapidClean AG71a recently. It was £59.99. I got it because it WASN'T rechargable. She would never remember to charge one and leaving one on charge constantly would kill the battery. Long cable to go wherever you need and more powerful than her old full size cleaner.
