    Growing Chillies

Anyone here grow their own chillies this is the time of year to to propagate them.

I have around 15 different varieties on the go at the moment, all from my seeds from last years crops

If there's anyone would like some seeds or swap let me know I would be glad to sent some out

    Re: Growing Chillies

I try but have issues growing the hotter varieties....

Normally get my mother to start them off as well (she has green fingers) and then I take them as the weather gets warmer and the threat of frost has cleared (I grow them outside).

This year I am thinking of using the South Devon chilli farm to order some pre-growth beasts and keep them indoors to see how long they can keep going for.

    Re: Growing Chillies

SDCF are really good, doing it your way your guaranteed ending up with the chillies you were hoping for. There's nothing worse than looking after a chilli plant for months on end only to find out its not what you expected.

    Check out their:

Krakatoa Chilli Pepper: Krakatoa is a heavy cropping new chilli pepper that produces a mass of conical fruits about 2-3in long. The chillis are mediium hot and spicy and perfect for asian cuisine. Grows to just 18 in tall and is perfect for growing in pots outside in a sunny spot where it will make a handsome addition to the patio.

One of my grow every year chillies heavy crop and long thin fleshed chillies that drys and stores well

    Re: Growing Chillies

still a little cold up north
If i start too early they end up in house too long and wife goes ape

Dorset Naga from last year were good ( I lost my crop early last year due to a hot spell - I boiled them forgot to take propogator lid off. Had to replant)
Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.

    Re: Growing Chillies

I've got some Naga's they are really hard to propagate, the naga's I have are:

    Naga Morich
    Naga Jolokia
    and the Dorset Naga

My Jolikia is now 4 years old I reckon they get even hotter as they get older....

    Re: Growing Chillies

Still got loads in the freezer, but this year I'll still be growing:
    Jalapeno
    Chocolate Habanero (overwintered)
    Peter Pepper (overwintered)
    Volcano (overwintered)
    Twilight (seedlings just coming up)
Little Elf (seedlings just coming up)
    Habanero Paper Lantern
    Purple Tiger
    Royal Black
    Fish (seedlings just coming up)
    Pusa Jwala
    Chilli de Arbol
    Padron
    Fatalii Habanero
    Bulgarian Carrot

Off to a slow start with the seeds this year due to heating failure and no mining rig to keep them warm

    Ah ha, a naga lover.
My favourite Indian uses Nagas but won't say exactly which ones, you don't make curries with your nagas by any chance and if so which variety have you found to taste the best?

One of my local Indians make a 3 Naga curry You get a certificate if you manage to eat it all.....

They do taste different also with fresh chillies you don't get the metal after taste. I normally dry the Jolokia's and use them as flakes over the year. I like the Morich best in Chillies and the dorset
    come a close second.

Awesome I have got most of those you must buy your seeds from the same supplier..... I have not grown the Peter pepper but wanted to try it, is that the one that looks like a p***s

I gave up on the purple Tiger I couldn't see the point in growing such a small chillie

Cant see any Scotch Bonnets on your list, they are good ones to grow, PM me if you would like some seeds

That's the one It doesn't stand out flavour or heat wise, but it is good BBQ'd and put in a hotdog, being the right shape and all... I don't think I've got any spare seed for it this year, but I can save some for next season if you like?

I love Scotch Bonnets, grew red ones a couple of years ago, 7 Pot Primo last year. I'm having to limit what I grow this year a little as we're going to be away for a while with nobody to look after them, but thanks for the offer. Main aim of this year is to grow Jalapenos for Kanoe to try cold smoking, some of the others are for decorative purposes at work

    Re: Growing Chillies

I got Kanoe one of these last year for his birthday that we have yet to try out. If we like it, we've got a spot next to our BBQ to build a brick cold smoker

Potting on a few seedlings today, the Fish chillies have put on a growth spurt :S
