GU10 Replacement

I'm looking at cutting the electric bill by replacing some of the down lights with LED replacements like this.

I've recently been doing a site for an LED based company and every time I dabble into a bit of research to see what similar sites offer, these always come up: http://www.ledhut.co.uk/ I've never used them, but prices seem relatively good and free delivery is always a bonus.

Good product, but not a 'warm' light. Would be good for offices, hallways, bathrooms etc. More focussed beam too.

thinking of swapping out my megaman 11w 119 degree cfl GU10s for some LED's, how would you compare the output against a classic halogen ?

mine are great but take a minute to get to full lumes so i want rid!

i wont be going for the same as you as i want wide beam again, but the lumes will be about the same

Ok - The light is quite bluish. Standard LED output I'd say despite as being advertised as warm white.
The beam is far more directed as well, rather than the flood of a standard halogen. You tend to end up with a white spot on the floor.
Apparent output I'd say is eaxctly right, if a halogen is 50w, these would be about 45w. Slightly less bright, but not by much.

I use 28w's in the kitchen (about 8 bulbs) I replaced 3 with some from b&q that were 3 for a tenner, they're 1.4w I think so not particularly bright but spaced out among other bulbs they aren't noticeable, they seem to be a warm light and I'd probably prefer a harsher light from them!

I'd love to replace them all but I just can't justify a tenner a bulb!

It's the longevity and the fact they use ~3w. Long term, they should easily pay-off.

yep i looked at those as they have the same spread as CCFL GU10's

I may go for the bathroom 1st as the holders in there can only take a standard size GU10 unlike the kitchen ones that can take the extra length, if i like them in the bathroom I will got for the 60 Watt Equiv version to get a bit more light in there.

Are those the megaman bulbs that jut out slightly from the socket? If so I switched from those to led recently.

A couple of years ago the led was useless, way too dim, hence the halogen. Now though, the led bulbs are excellent - instant light with no warmup and possibly brighter overall.

If youre interested I can check which leds I bought.

well they are longer but when i brought them the electricians shop gave me a longer housing to take them, but yes they are 20mm longer at least than a standard one, found em

trouble is now they are over 2 years old they are taking a lot longer to come up to full lumes, and as 4 are in the extension and dont have a floor above to keep them warm they can take 3-4 Min's to come up to full lumes so its time for them to go.

i take it you went for a wide angle smd LED to replace them ?

Highly recommended. As you say, the warmup was a nightmare on the halogens, and the wide angle makes such a difference on the LED ones I linked to. I used to have some GU10s where the LEDs were housed inside the bulb, behind a sheet of glass and they were terrible. Spotlight was okay, but between them was pitch black.
