    iphone demo

i found this while messing with stumble (good fun if your bored at work) not seen it posted on here before, so here we go
    http://gameplanets.blogspot.com/2007...full-demo.html

It does look rather nice, i like the way you can zoom in on the pics rather easily and the way it displays sms is a really good idea as you can see an ongoing conversation, rather than having to continually keep opening up different messages to see what they wrote. I just hope its not to drm infested not holding my breath on that tho

I've not had a date from any of my suppliers yet, I've heard prices banded around of about £450+vat on launch.

Its nothing special in my eyes, and I'm sure the interface will get annoying after a while.... Jack of all trades, master of none. Oh and the battery life is meant to be terrible.

I don't want an iPhone, but i do want to see what other manufacturers are going to do in reply to it. Usability seems pretty good from the demo, but who knows what it is really going to be like. Although i don't have a problem with how phones are controled at the moment, i think most manufacturers (yes, even Nokia and SE) need to look at improving usability.

Now screens are large and full colour, and the processors are powerful enough, more needs to be done to make some fo the advanced features easier to use.

Will they have SIM free sets across here? they are locking it down pretty heavily with AT&T in the US, so i would expect them to have a close tie in with local networks over here too.

However, going by what Tom Scott said, i'd expect about £550 sim free if they are available, and probably £200 + £30/month contract.

I also wonder how quickly the price will drop compaired with regular phones.

No 3G or WiFi, so yes, browsing the web could be expensive, but I would not say pointless.

At one point, I used to read slashdot, and the register on my Nokia 7610 quite regularly. You had to get used to the way the page layout got changed, and the loading times where slow but it was perfectly doable. Modern smartphones usually have a much higher screen res, so they will be better than my old 7610.

The cost of this browsing was usually only a few quid a month, (the pages are mostly text), though I did get one £80 bill from when I did some surfing from abroad once.

Wifi, 2G. Looks kind of nice as a toy, and for $50 I'd take one to use as a mobile web browser, but the price is high and the interface will probably be a huge pain.

iPhone uses the full safari engine so all the dynamic content and images will load, maing downloads on 2G a lot longer so your bills will go up compared to more simple browsers.

They are touting all the cool google web apps, and yet you are stuck with 2G data rates. maps are going to take an awful long time to download. I know they do on dialup, and thats faster than 2G

LOL you would of thought this handset would at least have 3g! shocking that it doesnt when almost all new handsets have it has standard! And if dial up is quicker than 2g than it realy is pointless to have a web browser on it. Im glad i diddnt wait for this useless piece of kit. outside it looks good but under the hood its weak

    Right

the iPhone does have wifi - -802.11a/b/g so it's pretty universal in that respect.

It also has EDGE. This can go up to 236.8kbit/sec
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enhance..._GSM_Evolution

Although i'm not sure how well supported this is in the UK. We have 3G, the US generally doesn't, but i seem to think they have a better EDGE system.

    Full iPhone spec:
    http://www.apple.com/iphone/technology/specs.html

So it isn't actually as pointless as we thought a few posts ago.

Both of the GSM operators in the US (AT&T and T-Mobile) support EDGE, however the only operator in the UK that supports EDGE is Orange.

It's a moot point though as there won't be an unlocked version of the US iPhone. Since it's a legal requirement for UK phones to be unlockable at the consumer's request, I guess any UK version will be unlockable though.

Edge is supported by Orange but I haven't ever seen it working anywhere outside of central London.

main thing is, in terms of advantages over the HTC Touch, i'm not sure what the iPhone has?

They both have (in my experiance, LG prada mostly) bad interface that is mostly a gimmic.

The HTC is cheaper, from my own experiance fantastic support, and runs windows mobile 6, which anyone can right code for, not too mention in .Net its really easy. Hmm.

Both are only 2.5g thou , thought the touch was 3g.
