    Tefal Actifry

Better half keen on trying one of these or Philips Airfryer model. Any of you guys tried these things that only use a teaspoon of oil. We don't use a deep fat fryer a lot but we thought that it would be a bit more healthy when doing Scampi or Chips etc.

Not had one, so my comments are anecdotal, or third-hand.

I thought about one a while back. Two different friends that had had them warned me off, because they both (and they don't know each other) had problems with them dying after fairly low use.

I ended up with a DeLonghi rotofryer, the type that rotates at an angle and dips food into the oil, then rotates it out, into air, then back in again. It's done good service, never a hint of a problem and was about half the price of the ActiFry.

I'd say that for fairly occasional use, the 'health' benefits of the Actifry don't justify the cost, and for heavy use .... change your eating habits if health is an issue. Oh, and choose the oil carefully, and don't over-use it.

So, personally, I wouldn't go the Actifry route, partly because of cost and partly because of the reported reliability issues. That said, as I said, my "experience" is anecdotal or third-hand, and I'm sure you'll find loads of people that have had no reliability problems and will sing their praises.

If you do get one, I'd love to know what you think of it in use.

Thanks for reply Saracen, yes also came across reports of the ActiFry ones 'packing in' so were undecided which route to take a.t.m., may just stick with the fryer that we have. If we get one of these new type i'll certainly let you know how it performs.

    Re: Tefal Actifry

There is something about proper deep fried chips, but for the few times I eat chips, it is less faff to keep oven chips in the freezer and cook them... In the oven.

I suppose you have to use a deep fat fryer for things like chicken maryland or fritters and doughnuts, but for scampi you could use a small small saucepan on the stove, or use other healthier ways of eating prawns.

But if you are only eating them occasionally, and cooking them at the correct temperature with a good quality high temperature oil, deep fat frying isn't that unhealthy.

You might want to look at this for some info about cooking oiks (groundnut ir sunflower oils are good)

    Re: Tefal Actifry

    Merdat,
I've had to replace the middle bit on mine twice but both times it was my fault. Once I dropped it. The other I jammed quite a heavy pan on it while it was on the draining board.
I've had no other issues with mine.
A lot of stores did stop stocking them for a while due to reliability issues around the time I was looking to buy one.
I know they have change the design slightly as I've had 2 slightly different types after getting one replaced.
I do use mine just for chips so its quite expensive for what I use it for but they make unreal chips.
You can cook them how you like them just by adjusting the time.
I know someone who does full English brekkies in theirs but Its not something I really enjoy done in the actifry.
If you do get one get an extended warranty in case.
    word of warning,

If you do get one, You will never enjoy oven chips again.

If you're still thinking about the Actifry, one of the TV shopping channels (Ideal) has a "special" on at various times today. I happened to notice scanning the TV guide. How special "special" is, I've no idea.

Decided to stick with the existing fryer for the time being but may revisit.

Oh great. In this house, about 90% of the time, the dishwasher is me.

    Re: Tefal Actifry

Since saying I was going to stick to old frier august last year, I have acquired something similar to the Tefal in the form of a 'Breville Halo' . Still assessing it but works fine for my purposes . I am usually the 'dishwasher' as well but find this thing easy to clean as 'non stick bowl' . Find the Paddle a bit of a pain so sometimes don't use it preferring to rotate the stuff half way through with a pair of silicon tongs. Definitely a healthy way of eating but have retained my old frier for the occasional 'deep fried haddock' etc. Will update as I progress with the thing.
