My other half has a good one, I'll see if I can find out what make it is.
I need to get one too though... been meaning to for ages.
Have you checked the local ethnic foodstore?
Had a couple from argos and they've been pretty good, think it's cookworks branded.
Do you use butter in your rice when you're cooking it?
Also, make sure you avoid using any sort of abrasive material when cleaning the rice cooker bowl
never used butter ?
The Blackbirds Big Ol' Stamp 'O Approval goes to boil in the bag rice as an excellent alternative. It's cheap (about 70p for 5 bags at Sainsburys), and only takes about 12 minutes to cook. The consistency and the quality is great, and it's so beautifully convenient. I'd definitely recommend giving it a shot.
Try this next time:
1. Get some decent Basmati rice
2. Gently wash the rice in a bowl till all the starch and crap has gone (~3 rinses)
3. Put this in the cooker with enough water to cover by 1 or 2cm (hot/warm water will speed up the cooking process - use a kettle, not warm tap water)
4. Add a chunk of butter (amount varies depending how much rice etc, roughly a teaspoon per person)
5. Add some salt (again this varies but go for a teaspoon as a starting point)
6. Put the lid on and let it boil
7. When MOST of the water (not all, if it has add a little from your kettle) give it a QUICK stir (aim to pile it all into the middle)
8. Place a clean cloth over the cooker and put the lid back on, letting it slow cook for 10+mins
9. You should have some damn tasty rice with minimal stick
10. Once the rice has been dished up, leave the cooker to soak in a small amount of water+fairy liquid for 10mins/while you eat to loosen up anything that might be stuck
Really didn't think my first post on this forum was gonna be advice on using a rice cooker!
Excellent instructions Beb..... I still blackbirds idea is the best though personally.
That or individual servings of microwave in the bag rice. I usually stock up when a supermarket has a special offer.
Cooking for one is a pain.
I think your making it too complicated, and butter? wtf?
This is the method I use and is the method I know everyone uses in HK and probably Asia.
1. Wash and rinse the rice in a bowl a couple of times. Usually takes around 5 passes, until the water is acceptably clear. Don't wash the rice in the non-stick cooker pan, it will ruin the coating over time.
2. Put rice in cooker.
3. Add water. I use the "finger-level rule". Basically you use you finger to measure the depth of the rice in the pan, then add the same depth of water above the rice. e.g. if the rice is 10mm deep, then you add water until it is 10mm above rice level.
4. Press the On button. Let rice cook. Takes around 15 minutes. Serve.
If you have a decent amount of rice leftover you can leave it overnight and use it to make Fried rice next day. Don't use freshly boiled rice for fried rice because it will be too moist.
I have a Panasonic. National is pretty standard. No idea about western branded rice cookers. lol
Here's my foolproof method:
Wash rice as detailed above.
Add rice to saucepan and add 1.33x water.
For 2 people I do 3/4 mug of rice and 1 mug water.
Cook for 20 mins with the lid on and on the lowest possible heat.
Turn off power and leave with lid on for 10 minutes.
No draining required.
excuse me, im asking about rice cookers, not other methods
As Infinite says, national (standard).
I got a little National and it does the job (even better as I got it free). I tend to find the rice too "hot" so I leave it in the cooker for another 20 or so minutes then serve.
What I have found is using rice from Tescos/Asda, is that the rice cooks weirdly in the rice cooker...it's the only rice to stick to the cooker and it doesn't taste very good.
Got a cheap 'Lidi' one seems ok -great results.
Bought mine in Chinatown....couldn't unerstand the instructions, but hasn't missed a beat in years.
Dont go for the very cheapest, but otherwise no need to spend too much. Also go for the smallest. Minimum we can make is two cups of uncooked rice...so we end up chucking some away.
