Re: Lets talk vino from Aldi and Lidl

One of the things about wine is the duty, which is fixed at around £2.50 a bottle, so if you by a bottle of wine for £3.50, you are really buying a £1 bottle of wine.

On the other hand, if you pay £10 for a bottle, you are getting a £7.50 bottle.

Price doesn't always reflect quality of course (or taste - which is personal), but it is something to bear in mind. Of course, it might also say something about the mark up applied to wine!

I second Toro Loco. I don't go into Aldi very often, just for their brioche buns, dishwasher tabs and washing-up liquid. I occasionally pick up a few bottles of Toro Loco when I'm in.

Not much of a wine drinker myself but this is all helpful for when you have to take a bottle to a friends'. Thanks!

Did my Christmas wine shopping at Lidls.
They had some astonishing bargains for dessert wines and sherry.
Amazingly sweet and nuanced 2009 Royal Tokaji, "The King of Wines, The Wine of Kings" as it used to be called.
A lovely 2012 Chateau Mauras Sauternes which was perfect for sipping with mince pies.
Tio Nico Pedro Ximenez sherry which was like drinking liquid Christmas cake - raisins and dates and currents in a bottle (£6 for 500ml). The sherry was also good for pouring a little over vanilla icecream!
Of course these were all REALLY sweet dessert wines, but perfect for sipping over the holiday.

Aldi's champagne at £9.99 (£10.99 for the premium product!) was very drinkable, certainly on a par with the own brand from M&S.

Can someone please direct me to a wine discussion?

Only time I bought an lidl/aldi wine was a Chateauneuf du Pape at £9.99 - it was bitter - almost undrinkable, but somehow I managed to drink it - but then I've had exactly the same experience at Tesco.
A lot of retirees at my Ramblers group buy their wine from the Deutsche discounters, I will enquire as to what their favourites are.

There hasn't been a serious wine discussion that I can find, so please feel free to start one!

Thanks for the offer, maybe I'll wait until the end of dry January - just realised that it's a resurrected thread and should have noted that before I originally posted.

Chateauneuf du Pape is nearly always undrinkable... blummin awful

if you spend £8 on something else you'd possibly be a happy bunny

You are aware that Sainsburys currently do unleaded and diesel for a mere 99.9p per litre

I've a soft spot for the Lidl £3.99 rioja. It's not the greatest wine on the planet, but it's eminently drinkable and as good as more expensive plonks elsewhere.
