Re: Question of the week: have you bought into the subnotebook craze?

Have to say I am tempted but will wait for the dell, etc to come out and some hands on info. Probably going to have to be runnng XP, as two apps I would like to use on the run require an MS OS, the main two I would like to use are sierra infinity and memory map navigator. Other than that its basicaly mobile internet access on a higher res screen than my Vario III.

At the moment - you can spend say £240 on a asus eeepc 4gb surf with a tiny 7" screen wifi, 4gb hd, 512mb ram, 900mhz cpu...

OR £60 more (around £300) on a Dell Vostro 1310 with a 13" screen, wifi, 160gb, 2gb ram, dual core 1.8ghz cpu etc...

    I know which I'd choose

For those considering a subnotebook, here's the HEXUS preview of MSI's Wind: http://lifestyle.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=14228

Whats the thinking on the eeePC 900 / 901 compared to the pcworld jobby? Looks like the 900 is going to be phased out for around £270 with xp.

I know they aren't great value for money compaired to the like of a Dell Vostro, but the size and weight are big advantages for me.

Very tempted with the current 8.9" and 10" models, but I'm going to hold out for more competition over the next few months.

Ive never really felt the need for a subnotebook. Ive either got my HTC when im on the go, otherwise I had my Apple Macbook, which has been replaced with a Dell XPS M1330, which for me is portable enough, but yet packs a far greater punch than the likes of the EEEEE!

Absolutly and in the case of your laptop doesnt weigh a ton either and can fit into a well designed laptop bag / rucksack along with other work related bits! The price of subnotebooks is all wrong, paying the priviledge of it being smaller and yet not as feature packed as a proper laptop. I'll give it a miss thanks

But the Vostro is probably about twice as heavy, plus it's substantially bigger!

Like myself and many other people have said time and time again - it's not just about the tech specs. Some people want portability, where a regular laptop is too big, but a smartphone or PDA isn't enough.

    Exactly Mike.

And if you want a "proper" laptop that is comparable with the size and weight, you are looking at spending £1200+ on a tiny little Sony or something.

Or you can get a second hand Dell X1 for peanuts which is faster, has a lot more storage and a better screen than the current sub notebooks.

Those who say it cannot be done should not interrupt the person doing it

Yes. If you're after a very small new laptop with 2 years warranty, you could always buy one that someone else has previously owned, is larger and doesn't have a warranty.

Anyway, we can discuss this until we're blue in the face (blue in the fingers?). Let's wait until the sales figures for them come out and then we can decide whether there's a market for them or not.

Re: Question of the week: have you bought into the subnotebook craze?

When I picked my one up from pcworld, two other people asked if any were in stock. Then again as its pcworlds usual "speedy service" I had to wait 30 minutes for the bloke to find one, then went on to another store to pick something else on reserve and collect and they couldnt find that at all.

Have to say really happy with this, got it connected to my phone at work and using opera getting very acceptable browsing speeds.

No, mainly because I don't currently use a notebook. However, when I did and when/if I get another, I prefer desktop replacement laptops that have quite a bit of muscle.
