Re: Headlines - BT to bring super-fast broadband to Britain by 2012
What good is 100mb broadbandf if BT caps you at 30GB? Obviously they need to get rid of traffic caps to introduce something like this. Otherwose its a waste of team.
As for virgin media. They can't even support a 2mb line never mind 50mb. |

At last competition in the high speed broadband market.

Hummm....Interesting......I wonder if BT forgot about people like me. Who are still UNABLE to get Broadband. It's not that I'm out of distance of the Server its just that the lines are bad.....So I'm stuck in the realm of 56k modem (which rarely if ever hits 56k) while 9 million other homes enjoy Ethernet cable speed.....

There is no indication of where the 10 million homes will be but it will almost certainly only be large cities that get this infrastructure. This is not going to help anyone in smaller cities, towns or villages. This is really bad news for anyone that does not live in a big city because it means that there won't be anything better than ADSL2+ available until at least 2013 (unless you live in an area with cable).

People moan about BT introducing new technology to bring us faster broadband. Yes, this new and very expensive technology will only be available in areas they can actually make money from it. How is this wrong? this is exactly the same as other countries with similarly fast internet connections. The only other way is for the government to step in and invest billions in rolling out a new infrastructure. But then those that don't have internet access or even a computer are paying for the unwashed masses to download the lastest BB slapper getting her bits out on YouTube-HD. |

Re: Headlines - BT to bring super-fast broadband to Britain by 2012
I assume this is the wholesale side of BT no retail. Wholesale sell the connections to BT retail and many other ISPS, so the caps have nothing to do with this annoucement.
Good post Funkster, I havent noticed virgin being being forced to role out out in non profitable areas. Having been online since prestel and compuserve I have been amazed at what they have squezed out of copper, wasnt that long ago they said 56k was the limit. |

Re: Headlines - BT to bring super-fast broadband to Britain by 2012
How is 21cn being classed as new news? BT have been roling out the equipment for 21cn for the last couple of years. Swansea was one of the first areas to be trialed. I was at fujitsu siemens back in 2006 and saw info on how BT are going to be improving the speeds.
I work for an ISP and Although BT do my head in at times I do feel for them as well. They have been in a situation for the past few years where they had to let other companies use their equipment to supply broadband and they wherent allowed to undercut the compentition. They then had to split into BT wholesale and Bt openreach to stop the perceived unfair advantage that IPStream customers got over LLU customers. |

This is over and above 21CN though isn't it?
21CN brings ADSL2+ to the whole country, this is way above ADSL2+ speeds. |

Why are they going to dig up the roads? I thought there was an ISP saying that drains could be used. Would it not be cheaper to run the cables thru these?

H20 Yeah that was it. Seems like a good idea to use as much as possible tho'. Minimise disruption and network an area quickly. I just want the cable well washed before it comes in to my house tho' lol

Re: Headlines - BT to bring super-fast broadband to Britain by 2012
I live next to Heathrow, and my area is still an "analogue" area, cant get any faster cable broadband, and my plus.net through BT copper wires is 2mb
i doubt they would upgrade this area. |
