Why do people buy Apple / OSX?

Also although the outlay up front might be higher than equivilent machine from HP/Dell/Lenovo, they just hold their value, so in 3/4 years time you could still sell it for a fairly good price.

I would definitely agree with you here, my missus Mac Mini cost her £365, I sold mouse & keyboard for £50, portable hard drive for £35 and the whole Mini sold on eBay for £370 2 YEARS down the line. Amazing.

OSX has really a small footprint when it comes to hard drives - at point the already mentioned Mac Mini had Vertex SSD installed as opposed to 80GB 2.5" Apple hard drive and boot time decreased by 5 seconds... [30 seconds vs 35 on normal mechanical hard drive]

I find this a bit strange - Windows machine will show huge improvements with an SSD - at the moment my W7 install on 40GB 3.5" HDD takes 7 minutes to boot up SSD will cut this down to a minute something.

I think that says something about the presumably ancient hard drive more than Windows.

Apple still haven't invented TRIM yet, you may find the 30s boot time may increase back to 35s as you fill the drive.

TLR most of it as people are suggesting the build quality is actually GOOD in macbook pros. Quite a difficult one for me to agree with after i have had the DVD drive replaced like 3 or 4 times and its broken yet again (damn slot drives), the screen has been replaced, the keyboard and mouse pad both died and had to be replaced and then not to long ago they had to replace the entire logicboard (motherboard). Admitadly this was all done free under the applecare (which i also got free as student at the time).
I dont know where the impression of good build quality came from because from my experience it sounds like pile of balls. Innovative yes, very however actual prduct beneith the pretty face is of questionable quality.

There was also a mention of the apple displays been excellent. Put side to side with a display of similar cost from other manufacturers and you realize its not entirely true. Back with the 30" cinema it was pretty much the case but these LED glossy things are distinctly average.

THAT ancient hard drive still boots up OSX in 35 seconds [I have actually used it on Windows 7 install just to get the feel]

In 2 years she had owned it, the machine was virtually no maintenance, never heard a single complain that something is not working, popping out, erroring - you name it.

In one instance the hard drive completely died, ordered a replacement and restored TimeMachine backup, Mac was backed up and running in 50 minutes as she left it [ok the last 30 minutes wasn't backed up ]

And this....... This is why I find myself perplexed by mac users.

I'll let you guys in on something. I'm meant to be good at my job (software n systems), I'm fairly top of the game (and I've acalades to back that up), I'm an enthusiast.

BUT I HATE ALL MY COMPUTERS.

They are flawed inperfect creations, they cost the earth and have so many stupid, god damned stupid little flaws, plus the odd gaping one.

However a mac user ignores that. Completely.

You said in 2 years, virtually no maintenance and never a single failure or error.... IT SUFFERED A DRIVE FAILURE.

HOW..... and I reserve this font size n colour for special use.

HOW THE HELL IS THAT NOT THE WORST KIND OF FAILURE, SHORT(hah) OF IT COMBUSTING, OR KILLING YOUR MOTHER AND RAPING YOUR SISTER. HOW..... HOW, HOW ON EARTH CAN YOU BE HAPPY THAT THE DRIVE FAILED.

I mean you say it had no failure.....

I know drives fail, heck I've been SSD in all mission critical machines for years now (thanks to TRIM support ), but I mark it as a negative when it happens.

This is why I'm always piss disapointed when I buy a mac anything, because retards like you are too busy suckling on the apple word to realise its crap.

Well, for me, the main reason is the fact that they just work. I've had my MacBook Pro for nearly 2 years now and I've not had a single issue with it yet, nothing has crashed, nothing has broken and it still looks pretty much brand new through looking after it.
I've had my iPhone 4 for about 13 months and it's the same story with that, the only problem I've had with this is with the mail app, but that got patched at some point along the road so I'm still happy.

Everything just seems to work, and you know that when you pick up your phone, it will work, or when you turn on your MacBook, it will work, and that's something I like and am willing to pay a price premium for.

And the fact they're Apple products obviously gives me a greater social status at the age of 19
