You know when you have one of those good ideas....
You know the ones, the sort your boss loves you for coming up with. Well I thought I had one a while back, and suggested it to the boss, with a confident 'yep, go for it' I set out to take on the task.
That was late last year, the idea being that we should do the mother of all group tests here at HEXUS.net, and looking through the history of the site I am fairly confident in stating its our largest EVER. You see, around the time of the Core2Duo release from Intel there was a bit of a surge for new processors, not surprising given HEXUS's own findings of this little road runner. Since then demand has stayed pretty good for the new boy, especially now with the introduction of the 8800GTX from nVidia its got to be said its great to be a gamer with money right now. The weird thing was though, Intel introduced a new chip on an existing format, LGA 775, the third party manufacturers must have thought all their Christmas's had come at once, here was a brand new, super-fast chip that the majority of their products would work with without a problem. Now getting back to my idea, it was a group test, we have established that, but its a group test of Socket 775 coolers. As I sit in my office here and I look across to the lab desk all I can see are heatpipes, fins, plastic and lost of spinny things joe public call fans. You see, I sent a few emails out to people, telling them what I was up to, and next thing I know the courier guy turns up with my own personal van, there were so many I didn't know where to start. Well as said previously that was late last year, I have finally finished the lab work on all of them, all 20+ coolers. Yup I said 20+ and I don't mean the usual, lay all the kit on the desk, stick a cooler on it and say its great at thermals type of review, I mean a full-on, fully built system with consistent hardware. So as i sit here about to begin the full and very comprehensive write up i look at the piles of boxes and remember this has already consumed two SOLID days of my life (48hrs lab work), is there a clear out and out winner so far? Maybe, I am not about to spill the beans, but I will say this, there certainly can't be any other ways anyone can think of mounting a LGA 775 cooler, I have seen them all, some quick, some complicated, some utterly useless and some totally stupid. That last sentence sums it all up quite nicely, I'm sometimes quick, sometimes complicated, sometimes utterly useless (never give me a musical instrument to play) and sometimes totally stupid. This idea would indicate more of the latter. Expect to see my ramblings on all that is dry and cold (ish) in the world of LGA775 coolers before CeBIT on the 15th of March. ![]() |

Erm, don't wish to be the bringer of bad news, but it's CeBit already...
We're waiting (Or at least I am ). |

So, it's not going to be released then. You sing glorious praises about your wonderful idea and it just disappears after 48hrs of lab-work? Hell, I'd be happy with just the results in a table posted here.
It'd at least give me an idea of what cooled the Core 2 Duo like a charm and didn't sound like a banshee with a megaphone (That'd be on par with whisper quiet to most people). Please pretty please? |

MD, you have redeemed yourself, despite the dire death threats I got from my boss whilst reading this at work!
Thank you. |
