Xbox 360 won't read any games

Right, first off, it's not my new xbox, had no problems with that yet(touch wood), but my brothers.

Memory is a little hazy, not sure if he bought it summer 07 or summer 06 (didn't play it at all), I'm leaning towards 07, which means it would probably just be out of it's year warranty. So either way, it's out of warranty. It won't read any disks at all. I would have known about it sooner but yesterday he moved from glorious northern Ireland to Bristol to live, leaving behind a good load of his possessions including this xbox 360.

Now everything else works fine on it, I was testing it earlier, it just won't read any disks (I've tried 4 games in and none works, ever) It won't even recognise that there are any disks in the tray, just spins them a couple of times and the dashboard just says 'Open Tray' like nothing is in.

Any clues on what to do? I don't really want to pay for a fault which seems fairly common among first generation xbox's and microsoft have failed to include in the 3 year warranty.

sounds like a laser issue. you can get cheap ones from ebay if you feel confident in opening up your machine? not exactly hard to replace - its either that or sending it away and paying rediculous fees

It's not as easy to replace as you think. Each drive has a key that is specific to that drive & to the motherboard. In order to use a different drive, you need to get the key out of the firmware on your original drive, and spoof the new drive with the right key.

There's software around that will do it all for you, but it's not as easy as you'd think.

As for the problem at hand - has he opened the Xbox at all? If so, did he plug the sata cable back into the drive?

Before you start messing around the innards of the 360, go confirm when it was bought. If its summer 07, seeing as its only springtime now, it should still be in warranty. Go check before it starts costing you money.

Luckily the recepit was found, it was bought on the 20th June 2007. I registered the console online and it went out of warranty 2 days ago, but I've been on the phone and emailed microsoft with proof of purchase showing that it was bought 11 months ago. Still waiting for a reply though.

They just give me a wee ring there saying they've extended the warranty to the date that it was bought. Wonderful

UPS will be coming to pick it up once I phone and arrange it.

Support has been very helpful now, no messing and waiting around

My laser went a little while ago and was replaced by a UK firm due to it being out of warranty. Seems as almost as common problem these days as the ROD.

Guess you can tell what happened.

they have recently changed the internal drives on the Xbox so this sort of problem shouldnt happen as much.

Ah, this is taking forever to sort out. The council were useless, saying it went through the crusher ( a load of balls, a large, heavy cardboard box would be sorted way before that) and Microsoft said they couldn't do anything. So now it's down to UPS, who were supposed to phone me last friday.

It all started out so well, but i guess nothing can be that easy.

Can't you just change the the DVD-Drive board from the old one to the new one if they are the same make and model???
The reason im asking ive just ordered a drive today should be here tomorrow.. so im just searching through forum's etc.. to see what the best option is.
but i've seen that you can change the board on some drives, but i dont know if you can on the Toshiba Samsung MS25...
