was there any update that made the 360 quieter?
mate just got his RROD'd 360 back and i've noticed that its louder than mine even when in the dashboard with no disc in the drive, he isnt online so doesnt get xbox updates but mine has been regularly getting them.
both were release date consoles but hes had hes dvd drive/motherboard replaced, but surely that should have made it quieter and not noisier!? have there been any updates which have directly or indirectly affected general noise? |

I know that there is at least two different types of fans they put into the 360. One is a delta made and i can't remember the other but the delta is louder so that could explain it. I have one of each and the noise is noticable.
Also there is quite a few various drives that have been put into 360s. They have been Samsung, Hitachi, BenQ and the newest drive used now is Lite-On. But you said he didn't have a disc it in so i don't know why i said that last bit for. |

as hes not online, while i am waiting for him to pick his machine up, i can connect it to live and run any MS updates on it.
but when its back at his (non-online) house, will this: http://www.xbox.com/en-us/games/back...ility.htm#disc also work if i burn him the update for him to run, or is that just the compatiblity update for xbox 1 games and not dashboard updates (like the upcoming "install games to hdd" update). |

I don't think any software update was released to keep the fans running slow, but as has been said, in a lot of cases the DVD drive is the main culprit.

I haven't noticed any real noise at all from my 360... is the only difference between each type just the memory space? Mine seems pretty quiet, even my PS2 is louder...

I bought my 360 about 2 months ago and its pretty quiet.
strange thing is my younger brother also bought one after me, probably around 1 month ago and his is pretty loud, not really a fan sound but vibrating sound so I guess its his DVD drive spinning. |

My first was really quiet till the DVD drive decided to make a constant grinding noise which drowned out even the highest of volumes.
Got sent a refurb and it's noisier than anyones I know, bit of a bugger  Plus I don't have HDMI.. tempted to "drop it". |
