Quite a few of my friends have android phones, and don't have a problem with them, fancy going into some detail as to why they suck?
And I've had a couple of friends with the ZTE Blade, all of whom said they're great :/
Considering I have a few mates who are also involved in the computing field and I don't get the impression Android "sucks" from them for general usage either. It has its flaws no doubt, but then unlike iOS and Windows Mobile,Android is running on a huge number of different specifications.
Not sure about the development side myself - I can probably ask around at some point. OTH,I am an end user,so TBH its not my issue anyway.
Phones like the Samsung S2 are extremely quick devices too - even die-hard Apple fans I know actually thought it was a nice package.
Not to say that Android is perfect - Windows Phone is nice to use and appears to have lower hardware requirements too,but Android hardly sucks for most users IMHO.
Its like with desktop OSes,you will always have the Windows vs Mac OS vs Linux arguments, with people who love each defending it like a couple of Klingon warriors fighting for their honour.
Have a play around with them and see what you prefer. Some of the Android phones have custom overlays/launchers on them such as the HTC and Samsung ones.
Also, check out the other different Android launchers available. There are switcher apps available which means you can try a few out on your phone at the same time.

I'm guessing from your post you don't wanna get into a contract?
Only reason I ask is that Phones 4 U were doing a deal where they gave you £100 to hand in your old phone to upgrade to a Nokia Lumia 800. I got rid of my crappy Blackberry, got £100 and an amazingly good phone, although I am on a 2yr contract so I understand you may not want to go down that road.
Best decision I've made in a while though. WP7 + Nokia build quality = win
Well, my current phone is a Nokia, some cheap model, and it's broken, so no overly strong desire to go back to them, and I doubt I would have gotten £100 for it
I could go into a contract, but from what I've seen they only make sense with more expensive phones.
I really like the HD2
Got both the HD2 and a HTC Trophy 7 (one for me, one for my brother)
Issue with the usb port, it's pretty knackered, and so getting W7 on there is a no go, since it can't be done via SD card apparently.
I far prefer the W7 interface, no doubts about it, but I wouldn't mind something more like the HD2 in size and whatnot, so may be getting a HD7... I knew getting into phones would be a bad idea
The nokia lumia 900 suprised me in terms of performance but the design is just awfull, and the 808 with that amazing camera and they place that sluggish CPU -_-
it is really small budget for any decent phone but lumina 710 is the best brand new phone option available.
Being a proud hd2 owner, i can assure you i would get another one if my current hd2 fail within the comming 2 years. It is the best phone if you want to play around android and wp7 dual system a single device.
