Re: HTC HERO Arrived today :D

    This is from htc's website.

    Q.
How can I improve my phone’s performance when it is acting slow, sluggish or is not responding as fast as it used to?
To improve your phone's performance, from within the Browser press Menu > More > Settings < Clear cache, Clear history, Clear all cookie data, and Clear form data. Also under Settings > SD card & phone storage verify there is enough space to run applications. You can uninstall an application or clear its cache in Settings > Applications > Manage applications. You can also remove the battery for 3 seconds and then reinsert the battery and turn on the phone.
    Can't hurt to try?

I've also heard that if you frequently wake up the phone and then send it to sleep quickly, it can slow it down. This is due to it having to to catch up on tasks it couldn't do whilst asleep and if you turn it to sleep it doesn't complete them. Next time it wakes up then it has to complete the previous tasks whilst do the new ones it's been unable to do whilst recently sleeping.

Could this make sense to you as do you frequently wake your phone your phone up for short periods of time?

Its a shame to hear that, I do think that after using applications it can be a bit sluggish, but it usually sorts itself out.

Funny thing is i had a Nokia 5800 prior to this and an N95 before that!

I'll certainly give it a go handscombmp - like you say can't hurt, and I'm really wanting to like this thing!

DsK - how did you find the 5800? I know that it's a mainstream device but a couple of people at work like theirs. I used the N97 that we have for testing in work and that wasn't really up to the task either.

I've taken a video of the typing lag I mentioned and stuck it on youtube for those interested.

Pritsey, that seems really slow, id definitely suggest trying what the others have suggested! I know it does get sluggish, but not to the point you showed!

The 5800 was a decent phone (specs wise), but yes, not really up to the task of much. IMHO, the Hero is a capable device, but the UI could do with some optimisation.

I'm really torn with this thing. I want all that it can do, but living with the slow down on a daily basis is a nightmare. I've cleared all cache, forms, cookies etc. Then rset the device and it did seem a little nippier to begin with, but then slowed down again. It's a bit rubbish if you have to go through all these steps just to maintain a usable device.

What about waking it up and then putting it back to sleep quickly.

Are you using the device like that as if you are try leaving it awake for longer.

Nope, just using it like a normal phone! However, if I did want to do that, then surely I should be able to anyway! It's like all the other stuff - clearing cache, closing tasks etc - I shouldn't have to do this in order to have a usable device.

Re: HTC HERO Arrived today :D

Still loving mine, and I still only experience lag when I have piled up apps without properly closing them, but TaskManager takes care of this for me.

Just downloaded ScummVM, can't wait to get started with this!

I think some people may have had defective handsets or are not using it sensibly which is leading to a poor user experience.

After all, think of it like a small computer. If you had a basic spec pc with Vista on it and tried multitasking to a large degree, what do you think will happen? It will slow down as it does not quite have the specification to multitask more than say 3 apps at one time. If however you are sensible with your use, and don't unecessarily leave applications open, then the computer (or Hero) stays perfectly fast and usable.

At the end of the day, yes, it is a SmartPhone, but if you are not smart enough to close applications you are using rather than just jabbing the Home button then applications will stay open and the phone will slow down if there are too many.

No one could claim that the iPhone is not prone by the same problems because the iPhone cannot properly multitask. If you treat it like the iphone, opening one program, closing it, then opening another, then it is just as fast and does not experience the slowdown people mention.

I also make sure to uninstall apps I am not using as well as clearing cache for browsing and frequently used apps/widgets if the phone starts to slow any further.

Can't say I am put of the phone, I still love it to bits and I still expect a firmware fix to help with the multi-tasking app-killing that some people need.

Re: HTC HERO Arrived today :D

I'm used to using a smartphone, have been for years now. I know to close task/apps and use it as intended.

Looks at someones G1 in work today and theirs was silky smooth compared to my G2 being jerky and unresponsive. Ok, they had rooted it and were running an overclock/underclock utility - also with SenseUI not being present that helps too, but there was a noticable difference in user experience.

Spoken to T-Mob who said I had to do a factory reset which I did, however it still isn't smooth. Going into the Contacts there is still jerkiness when scrolling though. I only have about 50 contacts in there, too not like I'm over-egging it!

Has anyone got any experience of how easily it scratches. (I know the iphone is pretty good)

I can't decided whether to get any screen cover.

My main worry about them is that they will leave a sticky residue when i peel it off.

I'd also love to see which ones you guys recommend.

I've ordered a pack of 3 screen protectors but they've not arrived yet,
Screen seems extremely durable though, not a mark anywhere on mine.

Most decent ones wont leave any residue at all.

HTC have confirmed to SlashGear that they are working on an update for the HTC Hero, which will be added to the company’s support site “in the coming weeks”. The possibility of an update had been raised when a member of Android Community was informed by HTC customer care that a release “that will make your experience on your Hero device better” was due; however the company would not confirm to us an exact date for the update, nor what it will address.
