The process is something like this, customer phones up telco to complain about abusive text, details are noted, customer needs to keep the text on the phone as evidence and go to police. Complaint made to police, customer get crime reference number. Police go to telco with a RIPA request and get details of sms sender, time & date. Police then decide what action to take, including the possibility of disconnecting the offending number, although telco can do this without police authority, usually only with repeat offenders though. Also the customer is usually offered a free number change Most police dont like dealing with this type of crime and dont take it seriously. |
