    Useful Symbian OS links

Below is a guide to Symbian OS I wrote for a friend who had just purchased a Nokia 6600. I thought that maybe some people on here would find it useful too...

    General Information

    Symbian.com
Symbian's official website. Symbian doesn't actually make the phones so it's tailored more towards developers and corporate users than consumers. However, its phone page is a useful guide to what Symbian phones are on the market and what ones have been announced for future release.
    http://www.symbian.com

    S60.com
Symbian only provides the actual OS itself and phone manufacturers then add a UI of their choice on top of it. The most popular UI is Nokia’s S60 (others include UIQ, S80 and FOMA). This is the official S60 website and contains lots of information on the phones and software based on S60.
    http://www.s60.com

    See in S60 Blog
This blog is written by the S60 team within Nokia and gives a good insight into what’s new in the world of Nokia smartphones.
    http://www.blogs.s60.com/seeintos60/

    Tommi’s S60 Application Blog
As you can probably guess by the author’s name, this is another Nokia blog. It’s subject matter is limited to applications for your S60 smartphone and it’s worth a read.
    http://www.blogs.s60.com/tommi/

    S60 hints and tips
An interesting collection of hints and tips for S60 smartphones.
    http://darlamack.blogs.com/darlamack...tribution.html

    Russell Beattie's "What's on my 6680" Blog
This blog entry is an excellent introduction to the Nokia 6680 and what it's capable of. The software guide has some excellent recommendations too.
    http://www.russellbeattie.com/notebook/1008503.html

Bill Day's "Everything about my 7610" Blog
Written in a similar style to Russel Beattie's blog, this is a great guide to Nokia 7610. His sample photo really shows off the abilities of the 7610's camera.
    http://billday.com/2004/07/11

    Nokia 6680 tips
Steve Litchfield gives some tips on what you can do with your newly acquired smartphone.

How to play DVDs on your smartphone
A bit of self pimping. This is a guide for taking a DVD and converting it to play on your Symbian smartphone.

    News

    All About Symbian
Symbian Affliate "All About Symbian" has all the news about SymbianOS, the various UIs and the software available for download/purchase. My first choice when looking for information. Check out their podcasts too.
    http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/

    SymbianOne
Another decent source for news. Sometimes has a different on an issue from All About Symbian.
    http://www.symbianone.com/

    My Symbian
    Yup, another good news source.
    http://my-symbian.com/

    Symbian v3
A confusingly named tech blog focusing on S60 v3
    http://www.symbianv3.com/

    E-series
A tech blog focusing on Nokia's Eseries Symbian phones.
    http://www.e-series.org/

    NewLC
A very good resource and news website for Symbian developers. If you want to write software for your phone, then this is definately the place to look.
    http://www.newlc.com/

    Howard Chui
Howard runs a very popular mobile phone website. It covers all kinds of phones and his reviews are usually decent. His forums are very comprehensive but some of the people on there are bonkers.

    Free Software

    All About Symbian's S60 v3 Essentials
A list of the best software for S60 v3.
    http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/featu...Essentials.php

All About Symbian's Free Series 60 Software Page
A great range of free software can be found at AAS's website. My pick from it would be the Gameboy Colour emulator, PuTTY and Bemused (a program from controlling WinAmp/Power-point from your phone via bluetooth!).
    http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/featu...icle.php?id=67

All About Symbian's Free UIQ Software Page
As the above, but for UIQ!
    http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/featu...cle.php?id=106

    Series 60/UIQ Freeware
A large and extensive guide for freeware on both UIQ (SE P800/P900/Motorola A925) and Series 60 (most Nokias, Siemens, Sendo, etc).
    http://3lib.ukonline.co.uk/nonags.htm

    Series 80 Freeware
As above, but this time focusing on the software for the Nokia Communicator (9210/9500/9300) range of Symbian phones.
    http://3lib.ukonline.co.uk/nonagss80.htm

    SymbianOS.org
An open source depot for Symbian software. Most of the software can be found at AAS, but there are a few extra pieces here.
    http://symbianos.org/

    Nokia E61 Hong-Kong Software Page
A hidden gem of free software. Check out the other Nokia software pages for more free software! Includes a MSN client.
    http://www.nokia.com.hk/nokia/0,,98972,00.html

    Fring
If you've got WiFi or unlimited data, check out Fring. It offers support for Skype and various messaging standards.
    http://www.fring.com/

    Nokia Podcast client
Allows the download of podcasts over-the-air. Great if you've got WiFi as it will download them whilst you sleep!
    http://blogs.s60.com/nokiapodcasting...y_for_n95.html

    NewLC's Open Source Competition
NewLC ran a competition for open source software written for SymbianOS. The 11 finalists can be found at this location, including links to where you can download the software for free.
    http://www.newlc.com/article.php3?id_article=539

    Nokia 3650 Software Page
A range of games ranging from boring to vexing. Originally for the Nokia 3650, they should work without problem on any Series 60 smartphone.
    http://www.nokiausa.com/phones/software/3650

    C2Doom
C2Doom really shows off what a Symbian Series 60 phone is capable of. Not only does it work with ever Doom WAD ever released (free shareware Doom 1, Doom 1, Doom 2 and some other Doom engine-based games) but it also features Bluetooth multiplayer! The software is a little rough around the edges but it’s good (and free!) fun.
    http://koti.mbnet.fi/mertama/downloads.html

    SP Mark 04
This little program is written by the same people as 3D Mark and allows you to benchmark your phone. Whilst being a little pointless (you can't exactly overclock your phone), it does show off your phone's graphical capabilities quite well. Available for both Series 60 and UIQ.
    http://www.futuremark.com/download/?spmark04.shtml

    Midlet.org
Lots of crappy Java applications but at least they're free.
    http://midlet.org/

    Nokia Multimedia convertor
This is a handy little program for converting WAVs/MP3s to truetones. This is from Nokia's Developer Forum so you need to register before downloading the software. There are probably some other good programs in the developer forum too though.
    http://www.forum.nokia.com/main/0,,034-63,00.html

    Control Freak
Like Bemused, this piece of freeware can be used to control WinAmp on your PC via bluetooth. There's also a paid-for Pro version with additional features.
    http://mtvoid.com/

    SMan
This is a must-have piece of software for anyone using a UIQ phone. It's a great task manager that allows you to free up memory, change your system font and many other things. It's completely free too!
    http://renegade.w3xs.com/droll.htm

    Symbian Themes
Not software per se, but certainly free. Symbian Themes is a massive resource for themes and wallpapers.
    http://www.symbianthemes.com/

    Babinokia
More themes, this time for S60 v3 phones
    http://www.babinokia.com/

    Commerical Software

    Handago
Handago is by far the biggest online software store. The range of software is baffling but luckily trial versions are available for most of the products.
    http://www.handago.com

    Symbainware
Symbianware have been going, under different names, since the days on the early Psion PDAs. There's a pretty good selection of software here too.
    http://www.symbianware.com/

    Agile Messenger
This is a great piece of software for instant messaging on your mobile. The software works with all the main networks (MSN, ICQ, AOL and Yahoo!) and is available for both Series 60 and UIQ.
    http://www.agilemobile.com/

    Wireless IRC
Arguably the best smartphone app around. The implementation is perfect and IRC is a cost-effective way to chat over GPRS. Available for purchase from Handago.
    http://mobileways.de/M/1/

    Sky Force
Old Skool top-down shoot 'em up. The full game costs money, the demo doesn't. The demo is long enough for a quick blast on the train home.
    http://www.idreams.pl/skyforce/skyforce.html

    SmartMovie
Fancy watching movies on your mobile? Then this is the app for you. It includes a PC-based video convertor and a player for your phone. The defaul codec is Xvid but it also plays DivX.
    http://www.lonelycatgames.com/mobile/smartmovie/

    irRemote
Use your mobile phone as a infrared remote control for all your AV equipment.

OK, I've updated it with a couple of new links. I'm sure some of the links are a little dated now.

The mobile industry moves too fast.

    Thanks mate.

BTW, whats the best MP3 player software that you have found? I specifically want gapless playback. Also uPnP for streaming music too i would love. Internet radio would be nice too, like shoutcast etc. Anything around that does this?

It's all available for Windows Mobile, i hope someone brings out some similar SymbianOS stuff.

Blimey - you wrote that in 2004 and then kindly came back to update it? That's brilliant!

Gonna get an N95 and then come back and go through this - cheers!
