    Nokia N90 - Any Thoughts?

    Hello guys,

As I'll be returning to my final year @ Uni I decided to give up O2 PAYG and get a contract phone and ordered a Nokia N90 via eXpansys with the Vodafone AnyTime 275 connection.

Does any one here have this phone already? According to eXpansys it will be delayed by 2 weeks which isn't a problem as I won't be back till the 20th

Will post pics and thoughts when I get it.

    --Mike

I had one for quite a while.

It's got some very good points:

    - The best screen I've ever seen on a mobile phone. No phone comes close and there's not even a single PDA phone on the UK market currently that can match it's resolution.
    - The video recording is superb.
    - The first phone to use Symbian OS v8.1.
    - Lots of RAM
    - The usual gubbins that you would expect from a modern smartphone - 3G, video calling, 2MP camera, hot-swappable memory, stereo sound, etc.

Sadly, it's also got some bad points too:

    - The form-factor is very interesting and works well, but it's a very large phone.
    - There's no vibrate alert

Overall, a very interesting phone but I doubt I would personally buy one because of the lack of a vibrate alert.

Quite possibly. I've heard of various forums that the reason that there's no vibrate alert is because it's got a Carl Zeiss lens and that Carl Zeiss was worried about lens damage.

For those too lazy to look

How does the UI compare to the SE UI btw?

It's standard Series 60. Great for texting but sometimes the option menus have perhaps a few too many layers.

The active idle screen (displaying application shortcuts, calender appointments, texts and missed calls) is very nice though and makes full use of the extra pixels.

It's a smartphone UI so it's never going to be quite a simple and intuitive as a good standard mobile UI, but it's easily the best smartphone UI around.

Thats crazy, is a lens that delicate that it can be hurt badly by vibrations?

If so, cameras on phones are just goin to get better and better, does this mean we will lose vibration on the whole range eventually ?

Vibrate Alert: HEHE, I've owned a T610 and a V3 Razor and neither one of them can be felt when they vibrate. Sometimes I feel the T610, but most cases if I'm in a mall I don't know unless I hear the ringtone.

I'm looking forward to this mobile and will see how it goes

Well, the ringer is loud enough that it kind of vibrates in your pocket. It's an interesting phone that does a few things very, very well.

Try the video recording functionality if you really want to be impressed.

Yea I did, it is quite sweet. My current gripe is that iSync doesn't support it and this is annoying me to quite an extent. However many people have been able to get it to work but they don't say how...grrr!

    iSync doesn't support you phone?

There's a hack for getting unsupported Series 60/80 phones to work with iSync and it sounds pretty straight forward to do. The downside? It apparently only works with Tiger v10.4.0.
