    Nokia spec for 6610i

    Data Transfer

    * GPRS (General Packet Radio Service)*
    * Data transfer up to 43.2 kbit/s
    * Circuit-Switched Data
    * HSCSD (High-Speed Circuit-Switched Data)*
    * Data/Modem Transmission

    Nokia spec 6020

    Data Transfer

    * EDGE: Mobile broadband access with upload up to 59.2 kbps and download up to 177.6 kbps
    Note: Actual achieved speeds may vary depending on network support
    * GPRS multislot class 10, up to 80 kbps
    * (HS)CSD multislot class 6, up to 43.2 kbps

    Orange still do HSCSD as far as I know - it's better than GPRS in some respects but still slower in (real-world) use than dial up.

    I don't know if anyone is rolling out EDGE in the UK - it's a tweak of GSM technology - Orange do it in France but not here.

    My personal experience of GSM/GPRS data via mobiles has been grim - they're very slow & expensive - but OK in a crisis.

    I've been sending photos wireless for a few years - Serial cable, IR, Bluetooth - always with a Nokia of some sort.

    On the few occassions I've needed net access while away from the office I've been dissapointed with the speed.

    If you can get to access points you're better off with Wireless LAN - BT do a pay-as-you go option for 10p a MB. Finding a WORKING access point is a different matter!

    Luckily for me 3 UK have fixed their network and now allow decent sized attachments at around 50p per MB so I send photos to picture desks via Email directly from a Nokia 3G handset with a RSMMC slot. (I use a dual slot PDA to get pics from CF to RSMMC) - dead simple.

    Hope this helps.
