That depends on how much you're going to use the PDA functionality of the device.

As with anything in life, single function devices are usually better at what they're meant to do than multi-function devices.

A PDA phone will give you lots of PDA functionality, but it won't match a regular phone when it comes to making calls and sending texts.

    Q. Are you going to be using the PDA functionality a lot?

    A. Everyday and all the time! Go for something like the HTC Universal* or XDA IIs*. They make great PDAs and offer a fast CPU, but are very large and often the call quality is poor. Texting with the Pocket PC operating system they employ can be a very fiddly affair.

    A. Quite a lot, maybe every day Go for something like the Sony Ericsson P910 or i-mate JAM*. They offer you almost all of the PDA functionality of the devices above, but in a pocketable form-factor. Making calls and sending texts on the P910 is pretty easy, though still not as good as a regular phone.

    A. Quite often, mainly music and syncing my contacts and calender Go for a smartphone like the Nokia N70, Nokia 6680 or Orange C550*. They offer a good mix between size, style, PDA functionality and phone functionality. They don't offer the touchscreens or processor power of a full-on PDA, but are almost as easy to use as a regular phone.

    A. Maybe a tiny bit, but not often. Go for a regular phone and enjoy the simplicity and size it offers you.

    * All these phones are made by a Tawainse company called HTC and rebranded under different names. You'll probably find that a few of the operators sell them under a different name.

I think you mean the M550.

The C550 is just an upgrade on the C500.

The numbering system is confusing though.

i have a xda2... i use it for games like tomb raider, PS1,SNES/NES,Megadrive,GBA,GB, Quake 1/2, Doom etc etc, viewing Divx/Xvid on the go, listening to wma/mp3. editing pictures and creating images, viewing photos from digi camera, taking amusing reasonable pics and videos that are pointless but amusing all the same, oh and taking down notes and loads of other stuff i either can't remember or CBA to list.lol a rich kids toy I love it but making calls is a bit embarrassing holding the beast.. get a decent hands free and then you are away well thats what i did. at the end of the day it depends if you want portable entertaiment on a high scale or need to do work and listen/view import notes/demonstrations whilst being able to be contacted...

I'd stick with the smaller devices, like the Jam. I've had an XDA, XDA2 and a Qtek S100 (jam) and i much prefer the latter - it's small enough to take with you everywhere and doesn't flatten it's battery in a day..

SP5 is a great new phone, hard to get hold of at the moment, its small, got built in wifi! QVGA screen. Its a phone, but it does most things you actually want to do on a PDA (Calender etc).

Most PDAs are very disapointing i find, enless they get large, in which case you don't really want to have it as your phone (you'll get mugged comming out of clubs as the torrent of txt messages hits you).

I have an XDA 2s and for the feature set, the size isnt really that much of an issue for me. the built in wifi is great since it allows me portable access in school amongst other places.
The downside is that of course, it's rather large depends if your willing to take the extra few pounds in your pocket.

I've got a KJAM-equivalent (MDA Vario) and it's pretty nifty as far as a PDA goes, with hundreds more functions and addons compared with my P900. Nice and small too and the keyboard is great for texts, but it does require you to use it two hands. The P900 was amazingly useable one-handed and I desperately miss the 5-way scroll wheel and keypad for tapping out texts while on the tube where my other hand's clinging on for dear life as I experience the roller-coaster ride that is the District line.

I've got a P910i and find that great for day-to-day use. Can be a bit slow starting apps but apart from that I love it.
