I wouldn't generally look for X51-specific software - you should be looking for Pocket PC software... there's loads out there, some freeware, some not. Are there any particular applications or games you're after (I'd recommend looking up Interstellar Flames if you want a shoot-em-up, if only because it was written by my friends games company).
The GPS side of things is more tricky - to get a lock you'll often need to be outside - indoors a GPS may have problems maintaining a lock. Occasionally in bad weather it can be hard, too. There's a difference between it receiving a signal from each one and getting a regular, verified signal which it can work with to calculate its position. In cities, in particular, it will often be getting signals which have rebounded off walls, etc, so it has to work things out for a while to figure out what signals are clean enough, etc. The first time it needs to get a lock it can take many seconds to a few minutes to get a lock - after this point, while the GPS unit is still active, if it loses a lock it generally regains it in a matter of seconds. You'll have to have a bit of patience for the initial lock, though. It will see several satellites, but until it gets a full lock on 3 or more satellites, it can't accurately calculate its position, so you're basically waiting for it to get that initial lock on at least 3 of them.
