Done this myself just the other week.
You'll want to head on over to Modaco and get yourself registered - they are the best smartphone community on the web imo! Take a look on www.xda-developers.com - there's a free to download program which runs in windows. While the phone is in activesync, the program unlocks the phone for you free of charge! Worked flawlessly for me within the first hour i bought it, and have been using my Vodafone simcard ever since!
